Austin Preseason ID: Preview Story

PBR Texas Staff

On Saturday, January 8th the PBR Texas staff will head to St. Edward's University in Austin, to host the first event on our 2022 calendar - the Austin Preseason ID. This open event allows our staff an opportunity to get a look at prospects and the gains they have made during the offseason. The Preseason ID series also serves as an opportunity to earn consideration for the 2022 Future Games, receive invites to future invite-only events and get on follow lists for our state-wide scouting staff.

ROSTER PREVIEW

We’re eager to get an up-to-date look at the  players set to workout at St. Edward's on Saturday, including several brand new faces to our scouting staff. Combing through the current roster, here are a few quick nuggets on some names that stand out:

+ 2025 OF Ed Small (Austin Anderson). The 13th ranked player in the state and two sport athlete shines at WR on the football field when he isn’t patrolling centerfield. The RHH has a physical presence in the box, and has a short, compact swing that is geared for hard contact to all parts of the field. He flashes 5 tool potential and is going to be one of the more exciting players to follow  as he matures. .

+ 2025 RHP Cooper Rummel (Dripping Springs). This will be our first look at The 6’3 RHP in showcase setting. His fastball has been up to 89 and it plays up at the top part of the strike zone. He shows a mid 70’s breaking ball that compliments his fastball. Rummel is ranked 12th in the state in the 2025 class.

+ 2023 Ace Reese (Canton). This will be the first time we see Reese in a showcase setting since June of 2020. The LHH University of Houston commit has grown into a 6'2 180lb frame that can produce some serious power. We are excited to see how he has progressed since we last saw him.

+ 2025 C Mitchell Morton (Plano West). The Jr. Future Games participant can really swing it. At the plate, Morton has some real power potential. Good frame that has plenty of projection left, and some current bat speed.  At the JFG, he showed off his arm and quick release gunning down multiple baserunners. The future is bright for this Plano West standout. Morton is ranked 15th in the state in the 2025 class.

+ 2022 OF Jake Duer (FM Marcus). The TCU Commit and 74th ranked senior in Texas is an athletic LHH with good bat to ball skills and present pull side power. Look for Duer to make his presence known in BP on Saturday.

+ 2023 OF Benjamin Merriman (Austin Bowie). The Texas State Commit and Future Game Alum seems to fins the barrel more times than not when he gets in the box. Whether that be BP or in-game, his gap-to-gap power is apparent. Merriman is the 11th ranked outfielder in the 2023 Texas class.
