Churchill put their undefeated district-play record on the line as they went toe-to-toe with last year’s 6A state runner-up Johnson. Churchill entered the game with a 14-4-2 record while Johnson came in at 16-6.

Taking the mound for Churchill was junior right-hander Landry Wideman, a Texas A&M recruit and No. 54 in 2018 Texas Ranking. Johnson started senior RHP Cade Moon.

Moon worked two quick innings but stumbled in the top of the third inning after yielding a single and three straight base-on-balls. Johnson turned the ball over to junior left-hander Jaydan Martinez, who walked the first batter he faced and gave up a 2 RBI single to Churchill’s left fielder, Hudson Head. Martinez would work his way out of the inning, but Churchill had already done the damage of plating four runs. The Churchill bats would remain relatively silent, tallying only three hits for the next three innings. In the top of the seventh inning Johnson made the move to send junior right-hander Karsten Battles to the mound. Battles would last 2/3 of an inning and gave up Churchill’s fifth run of the contest before junior right-hander Joe Jimenez came in to pitch the final out.

Wideman got off to a bit of a rocky start when he yielded four walks in his first inning, but he was able to work himself out of the jam without giving up any runs. The next three innings gave Wideman time to smooth out, becoming more efficient as he worked his way through the Johnson lineup for the second time. Johnson was able to crack the runs column in the bottom of the fifth after junior Jake Sims reached base on an infield single and scored two batters later on a sac fly by senior Jorge Collazo. Immediately following Collazo, senior Derek Martinez would reach on a walk, and score on a hard single by sophomore catcher Dominic Tamez (2019 Arkansas recruit/No. 27 in Texas 2019 rankings). Wideman’s day would come to an end one batter later giving up his seventh walk of the game. Churchill turned to 2018 Texas recruit Jack Neely (No. 29 in Texas 2018 rankings). Neely got a strikeout to end the inning and worked the final two innings for Churchill to pick up the save.

With the 5-2 victory, Churchill boosted their record to 15-4-2 on the season and 8-0 in district play.
