SAN ANTONIO, TX - Coming off of a strong week in which they beat then-top-ranked Johnson High School 5-3, and rival Reagan High School 12-4, Churchill came into their district matchup against Madison with wind in their sails. Taking the mound for Churchill, was senior right-hander Niko O’Donnell (Midland JC Commit). Madison would send junior right-hander Jalen Battles to the mound.

Madison drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning with a leadoff single by junior 3B Dylan Weidenbach. A sacrifice bunt moved Weidenbach into scoring position. Madison then capitalized on a defensive miscue by Churchill, as a back-pick went wrong, allowing Weidenbach to score from second base. Churchill was able to strike back and tie the game in the top of the fifth, as senior shortstop Jordan Cardenas hit a missile over of the left-field fence for a solo home run.

Both starters would settle in and make it through seven innings, with the score remaining 1-1. Battles would exit the game at the end of the seventh, and give way to sophomore right-hander Derek Klosowski. Churchill would lift O’Donnell after seven and two-thirds innings, going to senior Matt Moran, who yielded a lone single before getting a strikeout to finish the 8th. Churchill would then hand the ball to junior right-hander Jack Neely, a Texas recruit.

The score would remain tied heading into the top of the tenth, when Churchill would score the go-ahead run off an RBI-single by senior Garrett Wilkinson (Midland JC commit). Neely would work two perfect innings for Churchill, striking out four Madison hitters to earn the win. Final score, Churchill 5, Madison 1.
