Corpus Christi Open: Infield Analysis

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - We had a fantastic trip down to south Texas for the first event in Corpus Christi. Roughly thirty players attended. Here is the infield analysis.

Luke Smith, SS/2B, Calallen HS, 2021
Smith is listed at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds, with a still developing frame. The young middle infielder moves easy on the infield with polished actions. Quick first step, stays stacked over his feet as he moves lateral with smooth footwork, soft hands and fast exchange. The ball sticks in his glove yet never stops, providing for fluid motion into a clean arm stroke that works from different slots with accuracy, touch, and top velocity of 80 mph. Offensivley, the right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance with the barrel on his shoulder and his hands sitting relaxed. Simple load as he shifts his hands back and down while taking a short stride, creating some separation as he lands balanced. Inside out path with quickish hands that work through the on an uphill path, creating some lift with a top exit velocity of 84 mph. Ran a 7.14 60-yard dash.

Brandon Deleon, 2B/SS, Veterans Memorial HS, 2019
Deleon is an offensive middle infielder with a strong 5-foot-8, 180-pound frame. has solid footwork as he plays through the ball with rhythm, he has a clean arm stroke and makes the one-handed play with ease. The right-handed hitter can deliver the head with authority as he posted a top exit velocity of 91 mph. Starting from a tall, narrow stance, Deleon triggers his hands down with a hitch as he pinches his knees together, then strides forward as his hands stay back, creating exceptional separation that allows for a ton of lag and whip through the zone. On the infield, Deleon has solid actions with quickish footwork and soft hands. Makes the one-handed play with an easy transfer, and can throw from different slots with a top velocity of 79 mph across the diamond.

Parker Tennill, SS/OF, Calallen HS, 2020
Tennill has a projectable frame at 6-foot-1, 184-pounds. The right-handed hitter showed strength at the plate during BP with hard contact and lift from a tall setup. Loads with a knee-to-knee leg lift as he triggers his hands back into a front arm bar, then replaces his stride foot, landing balances. Quick hips transfer his weight with strength at contact and a quick hands through the zone provided a top exit velocity of 84 mph. Even though he posted a top velocity of 85 mph from the outfield, Tennill has the skill set that translates on the infield, with smooth footwork and soft hands that play well out front. Clean transition into his throwing motion, his arm works well from different slots with feel and accuracy, to go with a top velocity of 82 mph.

Jacob Evangelista, SS/2B, Klein Collins HS, 2020
Listed at 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, Evangelista has an athletic frame, and plays catch at a high level. He moves well at shortstop with smooth actions, quick feet, soft hands, quick release, and an accurate arm from different slots with a top velocity of 81 mph. The right-handed hitter starts from a slighlty open stance, then triggers as his top hand cocks the barrel. Short stride, smooth swing, inside/out path, and quick hands working slightly uphill with a loose finish produced crisp contact during BP with an exit velocity of 85 mph. Ran a 7.16 60-yard dash.

Ben Garza, 3B/RHP, Veterans Memorial HS, 2021
Garza has a sturdy frame at 6-foot, 185-pounds. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, narrow stance, loading with a slight toe-tap then taking a controlled stride as he walks away from his hands, landing balanced with separation. Simple weight shift, he gets the barrel on plane, then works up through the ball, making hard contact on the barrel during BP with a top exit velocity of 83 mph. On the infield, Garza has fundamental footwork with a quick first step and plays through the ball with rhythm. Soft hands funnel the ball to his midline, makes the one-handed play with a quick, clean exchange. Threw with a top velocity across the infield of 79.

Edward Molina, 2B/SS, King HS, 2021
5-foot-9, 140-pound, wiry-strong frame with plenty of room to fill out physically. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, open stance, then triggers his hands back, turning inward, loading with a low hanging leg lift as he strides forward, walking away from his hands, creating separation. Aggressive hack with a powerful weight transfer and loose hands, the barrel gets on plane, then works through the zone with lag, produced hard line drives through the middle of the field with a top exit velocity of 86 mph. On the infield, Molina has quickish footwork with clean exchange, and can throw from different slots with accuracy and a top velocity of 80 mph across the diamond.

Andrew Garcia, 1B/RHP, King HS, 2021
Strong 6-foot, 180-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, open stance, then loads back smooth, striding forward with a leg kicks as he cocks the barrel in front of his body. Lands closed, aggressive weight shift, quick-strong hands whip the barrel on an uphill path with a loose finish. Solid power for his class, Garcia drove the ball deep during BP, including a home run. At first base, he plays through the ball with soft hands, quick feet, and shows solid arm strength across the diamond with a top velocity of 81 mph.

MacLean Harkins, 3B/RHP, Westlake HS, 2020
Harkins has a durable frame with a strong lower half at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds. A two-way player and right-handed hitter, Harkins starts from a tall stance then uses a relaxed load as he triggers his hands and takes a controlled stride, landing balanced. Smooth hack with quick hands and balanced weight shift. Does a nice job of keeping his hands back as he makes his initial move to the ball. Clean path through the zone, Harkins creates hard contact and power with relative ease. Homered during batting practice and posted a top exit velocity of 86 mph off the tee. On the infield, he plays through the ball with quickish footwork, soft hands, clean exchange, and accurate arm at 76 mph across the diamond.

Ethan Bourg, SS/C, Tomball Memorial HS, 2022
Listed at 5-foot-9, 135-pounds, Bourg has a still developing, athletic frame. The young, right-handed hitter can handle the bat, and has good energy in his hack with twitchy-hands that deliver the barrel. Loads with a reverse leg lift as he triggers his hands back with a slight wrap. Fluid swing with balanced weight transfer, inside-out path, and loose finish with a top exit velocity of 80 mph that produced crisp line drives during BP. On the infield, Bourg has a quick first step, playing through the ball with confidence, soft hands, and throwing 76 mph across the diamond.

Camden Guarnere, RHP/3B, Barbers Hill HS, 2019
5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a balanced stance before he loads back smooth and triggers his hands back and down. Short stride, lands with separation, smooth hack with an easy weight transfer and quick bat through the zone. Inside-out path with a line drive approach and a top exit velocity of 80 mph. On the infield, Gaurnere has quick feet as he plays through the ball with soft hands and threw with a top velocity of 84 mph.

Troy Johnson, SS/OF, Ray HS, 2021
Johnson has a high-waisted, still developing frame at 5-foot-10, 153-pounds. Ran a 7.14 60-yard dash with long strides. The right-handed hitter starts from a tall, slightly open stance, then loads smooth as he triggers his hands down, tilting his shoulders forward, taking a relaxed stride and slotting the barrel into the zone early. Barrel works on an uphill plane as he transfers his weight into a firm front side. Quick hands with good strength for his class produced mostly ground balls during BP with a top exit velocity of 82 mph. Johnson has smooth footwork on the infield as he plays through the ball with soft hands, and throws with a clean arm swing and top velocity of 73 mph across the diamond.

Gilbert Mata, SS/2B, McAllen HS, 2019
Listed at 5-foot-7, 150-pounds, Mata ran the fastest 60-yard dash of the day with a 6.99. He has great footwork on the infield, plays low on the backhand, can play on the run, and has an accurate arm with a top velocity acros the diamond of 72 mph. Offensively, the right-handed hitter loads back smooth as he triggers his hands, then pinches his knees together, coiling his his hips with a slight leg-kick before striding forward. Quick hands on a flat path through the zone, Mata has a strong top hand and low finish with a top exit velocity of 86 mph.

Dave Wilson, 1B/OF, Akins HS, 2019
Wilson has a strong, muscular frame at 6-foot-1, 205-pounds. The right-handed hitter was on a mission during batting practice, inflicting damage as he impacted the baseball and launched three home runs. Starting from a nuetral stance with his hands set over his back shoulder, he pushes back, then strides forward as his back knee starts to transfer and his hands slot into the hitting zone before he uncoils the full meausre of raw strength on a slightly uphill plane with a top exit velocity of 93 mph. In the outfield, Wilson threw 91 mph from a high slot with some effort. At first base, Wilson plays low with a wide base and his hands out front. Quick first step with a strong arm across the diamond with a top velocity of 88 mph.
