DFW Preseason Analysis: Pitching Analysis

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

PLANO, TX - The talent in Texas always amazes our scouting staff and we were fortunate to see a ton of high end players on Saturday at the DFW Preseason ID. Today, we bring you the pitching analysis from that event.

Top Performers

Collin Horton, RHP, Keller HS, 2019
Odessa JC commit. 5-foot-11, 195-pounds with a thick, strong, broad shouldered frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing. Fastball sat 87-89 for the duration, flashing tilt to his arm side. Throws a plus changeup with same arm speed and good arm side depth at 78-80 mph. His curveball has 12/6 shape and with good rotation, popping up out of the hand early.

Jalen Davenport, RHP/OF, Klein Collins HS, 2020
Davenport has a muscular frame at 5-foot-10, 180-pounds. The right-hander topped out at 90 on the bump, working mostly 86-89 with a long reach out of the glove and max effort delivery. Threw his changeup with same arm speed at 75-78 mph, allowing for quality arm side fade. Spun his curveball at 66-68 mph with early break.

Bristol Carson, LHP/1B, Guyer HS, 2020
Carson has a long-limbed frame at 6-foot-1, 180-pounds. On the mound, the left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a clean arm swing and tilted shoulders. His fastball sat at 80-82 mph. Shows good feel for his changeup at 77-79 mph even though the pitch is close to fastball speed. His slider plays with 1/7 shape and good rotation at 69-72 mph. With his frame and feel for off speed pitches, look for Carson to generate a good bit of interest this spring.

Cade Medlin, RHP/3B, New Diana HS, 2020
At 6-foot-2, 187-pounds, the right-hander has a clean arm swing and the ball comes out easy with sink at 82-85 mph, tickled 89 once. The slider has good shape with short, late break at 73-75, and the changeup came in at 74-75 mph. Just an early season bullpen session, I would expect him to be higher on the gun this spring with the same sink on his fastball and sharper break on the slider. With his feel for three pitches, college coaches will want to make sure they see New Diana play this spring.

Colin Hudson, LHP, Marcus HS, 2020
6-foot, 150-pounds. The left-hander has a long, loose arm swing with a high release point that creates angle on his fastball at 81-83 mph. Releases his changeup from the same window with fastball arm speed at 72-74 mph. Throws a 1/7 curveball at 64-66 mph.

Alan Benhardt, LHP/OF,  Frisco Independence HS, 2021
Benhardt has a high-waisted frame at 5-foot-11, 165-pounds. On the mound, the left-hander works from a high slot with long, clean, quick arm swing, high leg lift, tilted shoulders, drop and drive delivery, athletic lower half down the mound with slightly above average effort. He pitched at 80-83 with his fastball, flashing angel. Mixed in a short breaking curveball at 69 mph with 1/7 shape, and a 74-75 mph changeup. Moving forward, the athleticism, frame and left-handedness should catch the eye of college recruiters.

Nicholas Moore, RHP/OF, Plano West HS, 2021
Moore has an athletic, lean-muscular frame at 6-foot-1, 170-pounds. On the mound, he has a loose arm swing with an 83-85 mph fastball. Breaking ball has good shape at 70-71, and the changeup is also a plus pitch that he threw with same arm speed at 72-74 mph. Moving forward, Moore’s athleticism and ability to play multiple positions should allow him to catch the eye of college recruiters.

Camron Montz, RHP, Marcus HS, 2021
Montz has long-limbed, lean frame at 6-foot-2, 150-pounds. The right-hander has an athletic delivery with a loose arm stroke from a ¾ slot. High leg kick at the top of his delivery with coiled hips as he rides his back leg down the mound. His fastball topped out at 84, pitching at 81-82 with touch and feel as he turns his fastball over. Showed feel for a 69-72 mph slider with 10/4 shape, and that pitch should tighten up as he continues to develop. Throws his changeup with quality arm speed and depth at 72-75 mp.

Tyson Carlton, RHP, Allen HS, 2020
Carlton has a strong, durable frame at 6-foot-5, 230-pounds. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a clean arm swing and a tall-and-fall delivery with athletic finish. Scattered his fastball around the zone at 83-86 mph, flashing steep angle when located at the bottom. Curveball had early break with 11/5 rotation at 71-75 mph. Good feel for the changeup at 77-80 with same arm speed.

Nick Greaney, RHP/1B, JJ Pearce HS, 2021
Greaney has large, still developing frame for a sophomore at 6-foot-7, 240-pounds. On the mound, the right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long, loose arm swing, getting down the mound with a long stride, good hip drive and slight head tilt to finish. Working exclusively from the stretch, his fastball sat 81-84 mph, while his slider flashed sharp downer shape with good 11/5 break at 67-70, and he threw his changeup at 68-69 mph.

Harrison Durow, RHP, Lovejoy HS, 2020
Durow has a still developing, projectable pitcher’s frame 6-foot-3, 185-pounds. The right-hander works from an over the top slot with a long arm stroke and effort down the mound. His arm speed has increased over the off-season, now pitching at 84-85 and as he adds strength, could see it climbing a tick higher this high school season. Curveball had early break out of the hand at 68 mph with 12/6 shape to finish. Changeup came in at 77-78 mph with arm side depth.

Ryan Pehrson, RHP/SS, Southlake Carroll HS, 2021
Pehrson has a long-limbed frame at 5-foot-11, 163-pound frame. On the mound, the right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a clean arm swing and smooth tempo down the mound. Fastball sat 80-82 mph. Curveball has quality rotation and 11/5 shape with depth to finish at 64-67 mph. Did a nice job of locating his changeup at the bottom - and below the zone at 70-72 mph with same arm speed.

Kenton Weiland, LHP, The Woodlands HS, 2020
Long-limbed, wiry frame at 6-foot-3, 170-pounds. The left-hander has improved his off speed offerings since last year, now throwing a sharper curveball with short, downer break at 71-73, and his slider with more lateral “cutter” movement at 73-76. Works from a ¾ slot with some effort that creates deception on his fastball at 81-83 mph.

Luke Douthitt, RHP, Plano West HS, 2019
Cisco JC commit. Douthitt has a lean-projectable pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds. The right-hander has an up tempo delivery with a short arm circle and quick hand out front from a ¾ release. When he stays on top of his fastball the pitch has sinking action at 85-86 mph. Changeup has fade and depth at 75-77 mph. Curveball shows early break with gradual depth at 68 mph.

Danny Davis, RHP, Plano West HS, 2020
Long-limbed, projectable pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-5, 195-pounds. The right-hander has smooth tempo in a tall-and-fall delivery, short stride with an athletic finish. Works from a high-¾ slot with a shorter arm circle. Fastball sat 83-84 mph, and he spun his curveball in the zone at 69 mph with 12/6 shape and deep break to finish. Splitty appears to be a solid third pitch, flashing the ability to bounce it for a chase pitch ahead in the count.
