Dallas Preseason ID: Preview Story

Brandon Gowins
Assistant Scouting Director

On Sunday, January 23rd, the PBR Texas staff will head to St. John Paul II in Plano to host the final event on our 2022 calendar - the Dallas Preseason ID. This open event allows our staff an opportunity to get a look at prospects and the gains they have made during the offseason. The Preseason ID series also serves as an opportunity to earn consideration for the 2022 Future Games, receive invites to future invite-only events and get on follow lists for our state-wide scouting staff.

ROSTER PREVIEW

We’re eager to get an up-to-date look at the 90+ players set to workout at John Paul II on Sunday, including several brand new faces to our scouting staff. Combing through the current roster, here are a few quick nuggets on some names that stand out.

+ 2022 C Theo Kummer - The top uncommitted Sr. at the event, Kummer has all the necessary traits to be a starting catcher at the next level.  He is a good receiver of the baseball and shows the willingness to block.  He has a quick transfer and avg arm in the running game.  At the plate, he has good bat speed, and as he has gotten stronger has shown the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark.

+ 2023 RHP Cole Loser - The Jr. RHP really started to make a name for himself at the end of last summer and it carried into the Fall. His fastball sits in the mid to upper 80’s and he shows feel for a high spin CB that has the makings of a true put a way pitch.

+ 2023 1B Andrew Schultz - The Power Hitting LHH 1st baseman has some of the better power at this weekend’s event.  He can hit the ball out to all fields but also still limits the swing and miss.  Schultz is a strong kid who has a chance to put big numbers this year.

+ 2024 MIF Sawyer Farr - Farr comes into this weekend on the heels of a successful season as QB1 for his Boswell Football team.  The LHH Shortstop has the look of a future P5 Infielder. He handles short with ease and can make all of the  necessary plays. At the plate, he has a relatively short stroke for all the long levers he has, and consistently delivers hard contact.  He is high waisted and has plenty of projection left.

+ 2024 LHP/OF Park Prater - Prater is a projectable two way talent out of Argyle. The 6’3 Lefty has all the makings of a future weekend starter at the next level on the mound.  We are excited to see what gains he has made since the last time we saw him.  He also can swing it from the left side as well. Has a short stroke and like his summer ball teammate Farr, there is plenty of projection left.

+ 2024 C Zane Becker - The sophomore catcher from Flower Mound is one of the better catch and throw guys in his class. Last year as a freshman, he caught a plethora of high end arms on Flower Mound’s Varsity and that experience should serve him well going forward.  He is also a good athlete for his position, and we are excited to see the gains he made in the batter’s box during the offseason.

There are several other kids we are looking forward to seeing this weekend, as this will be easily the most attended event in January. Will be exciting to see some familiar faces and great to find new prospects to follow this coming spring and summer.
