Day 2: Texas Spring Break @ Katy

KATY, TX - On the Hunt’s venture into Texas for the first weekend of Spring Break tournaments, made its way to the beautiful confines of Katy High School, just west of Houston on Day 2. The day was highlighted by two big, athletic right-handers, and University of Texas recruits, Ty Madden (Cypress Ranch HS, TX) and Coy Cobb (Katy HS, TX). The strong-armed righties would showcase high velocities as well as feel for above average secondary offerings.

In the first game of the day, Cypress Ranch won 15-0 in 5 innings. Ty Madden went the distance not allowing a hit until giving up a single in the final frame. Standing 6-foot-3, 190-pounds with a long torso and proportional strength, Madden sat 90-92 for the early part of the game, and touched 93 mph and 94 mph in the first. Ripping the ball out of his mitt late over the rubber, he ignites a fast arm swing that allows him to get on top of the ball from a high ¾ slot, and work downhill with a quick hand out front with little effort and a quieter head. Although his slider has been the secondary pitch most talked about in the past, it backed up some on the day at 81-84, and his changeup took centerstage. Exhibiting almost screwball-type darting action to the arm side, Madden toyed with hitters while throwing the pitch with fastball arm speed at 80-84. It was a swing and miss offering on the day, and looked to have a chance to be a real weapon moving forward. The game lost its luster early on as the Cypress Ranch bats thrived, and at times Madden worked too fast while trying to usher the game along. This caused him to throw away some pitches, and though he is far from unpolished, Madden looked to be more of an athlete than a pitcher on the day, but the blow out definitely played a part. At any point that he found himself in “trouble”, he was able to reach for a second gear. His frame promises much more to come, and with the way that his changeup has developed, he will have a strong chance to continue as a starter at higher levels.

The second game pitted Cy-Ranch against Katy in a match-up of two top ten teams in PBR Texas’ Power 25 Rankings. 2018 RHP Coy Cobb (Katy HS, TX) got the start for the Tigers, and would punch out 10 in five innings of work allowing two runs on five hits. The tall right-hander stands 6-foot-4, 175-pounds with lean muscle throughout. He touched 93 mph in the first inning, and worked 88-91 throughout most of the game. Featuring a slight stab in the back to start his arm swing, Cobb lost his high ¾ release point some, but showcased the athleticism necessary to make adjustments in finding it the majority of the time. His feel for his secondary offerings allowed him to get out of jams, and he showed confidence in throwing his slider in any count. The slider worked best when thrown at 78-80, and featured tight spin with tilt. It was a swing and miss offering at times, and enabled Cobb to rack up some big strikeouts. He flipped in an 11/5 curveball for strikes at 70-74, and while it was effective in slowing down hitters, it morphed with his slider at times into more of a slurve. Cobb’s pace was slower throughout the delivery, and he struggled to get into a rhythm with longer gaps between pitches. He has a clean, simple delivery, and perhaps his best attribute is his poise and controlled aggression. Cobb looks the part of a fighter on the mound, and possesses that “winning DNA” as he blasted a home run early in the game, and hammered a double in extra innings to drive in the run that would end the game in a 3-3 tie.
