Houston Preseason ID: Quick Hits

HOUSTON, TX - On January 18th, the PBR Texas staff hosted the Houston Preseason ID at the Schiel Rd Sports Complex, our final preseason event of 2020 before the high school season begins. The event featured players from the 2021-2024 classes. Today, we are giving a quick breakdown of the top performers from the event.


+ One of the big winners on the day was 2022 RHP/MIF Caleb Castle (Clear Lake). Castle was up to 88.4 mph, averaging 87.6 mph and 2467 rpm. Breaking ball shows power curve action up to 74.8 mph with 2479 rpm with good feel for spin. High upside with lots of projectability in his lanky frame. Also showed natural rhythm at the plate, with a max exit velocity of 93.8 mph and a max distance of 330 feet and was 85 across the diamond with clean, athletic actions. 

+ 2021 OF Maddox McDonald (Antonian Prep) was statically impressive across the board. He ran the fastest 60 at 6.77 sec and had the 2nd-highest velo from the outfield at 86 mph. At the plate, he showed good rhythm and the ability to drive the ball to the pull side with a max exit velocity of 91.5 mph and Max distance of 328 feet. 

+ 2022 C/IF Xavier Lecours (Milipitas, CA) was one of the more impressive backstops on Sunday. Quick exchange, quick and accurate throws with good footwork and pop time ranging from 2.13-2.22. 

+ Uncommitted 2021 3B/RHP Kason Hiatt (Fort Bend Dulles) had a strong showing. He showed some pull side pop as well the ability to drive it back up the middle with a max exit velocity of 98.28 mph and a max distance of 316 feet. 

+ 2023 LHP/OF Brock Rod (El Campo) performed really well all-around on Sunday. He showed a loose arm up to 87 mph from the outfield with accurate throws. In BP he showed good feel for the barrel, staying up the middle and flashing some pull side pop. On the mound, fastball was up to 83.7 mph with arm-side movement up to 23.6 in, curveball averging 73.7 mph and changeup averaging 75.2 mph with arm-side action pairing well with fastball. Repeated delivery well with a very consistent release point. 

+ 2022 OF Cade Warmke (Brenham) had an all-around solid day. Clean, athletic actions from the outfield throwing 83 then had the highest max distance of the day with 357 feet and a max exit exit velocity of 91.9 mph. 

+ Long, lanky 2022 SS/RHP Cole Murphy (George Ranch) showed well the entire day. Ran a 6.99 60 to start the day, showed athletic actions on the infield with 83 mph velo across the diamond, and then had a max exit velocity of 90.2 mph and max distance of 327 feet. On the mound, Murphy was up 85.97 mph with arm-side run. Curveball was 70.9 with 2449 rpm spin and sharp action. 

+ Well-built, thick lower half 2024 C Jackson Preismeyer (Strake Jesuit) had a solid day showing a quick exchange and good footwork, with pop times ranging from 2.19-2.36. During BP, he showed good ability to get vertical with his barrel before attacking the ball with a quick swing, launching balls to the pull side. Max exit velocity of 98.2 mph and max distance of 350 feet. 

+ 2023 ambidextrous pitcher Jon Shields (St. John XXIII) had a good day on the mound. From the left side, he was up to 84.8 mph with good feel for curveball and changeup. From the right side, he was to 83 mph. 

+ 2023 RHP Ethan Coronel (The Woodlands) continues to physically develop each time we see him. Fastball was up to 83.8 mph with lots of strikes, big curveball at 66 mph and changeup at 74 mph with arm-side action. Clean, very repeatable delivery that will help him as he continues to develop and add more velocity. 

+ 2022 C William Stonestreet (Kingwood Park) showed a quick exchange and release with accurate throws consistently on the bag. In BP, he had a max exit velocity of 94.4 mph hitting lots of line drives and keeping everything back up the middle. 

+ Long, high-waisted 2023 RHP Sawyer Bonin (Home School) was up to 83.1 mph with arm-side run and strikes at the bottom of the zone. Curveball averaged 71.2 mph with sharp action and intent to keep it down in the zone.
