I-10 Border Battle: Pitching Analysis

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

BEAUMONT, TX - On Saturday, January 13 The Prep Baseball Report hosted The I-10 Border Battle at Lamar University. The event featured some of the top players from PBR Louisiana and PBR Texas’ coverage area. Here is the pitching analysis from that event.

PITCHERS

Parker Moye, LHP, Evadale HS, 2019
At 6-foot-2, 235-pounds, Moye has a thick, strong frame. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing. Drop and drive, aggressive delivery with good tempo. He pitched 87-90 mph with his fastball. His curveball came in at 68-72 mph with 1/7 shape. Throws a 78-80 mph changeup that flashes arm side depth. With his natural arm strength, sturdy frame, and feel for three pitches, Moye will be a nice addition to a recruiting class.

Nicolas Gullo, RHP/SS, Dripping Springs HS, 2019
Lamar commit. Gullo had himself a solid all-around day. On the mound, the right-hander pitched at 85-88 mph with tons of arm side run from a high-¾ slot with a loose, quick arm stroke. His curveball has really good depth and bite at 71-73 mph with 11/5 shape. Mixes in a 74-75 mph changeup with arm side run.

Austin Teel, LHP, College Station HS, 2019
At 5-foot-10, 171-pounds, Teal has a lean-strong frame, and continues to make strides leading up to the high school season. He topped out at 87 mph, sitting mostly 84-86 mph. But it was the command and sharpness of the curveball (67-69 mph) that has improved since the last time we saw him. Also has good feel for a 77-79 mph changeup. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a short arm stroke and regular effort in a drop and drive delivery. Lands closed, athletic lower half, repeatable delivery with all three pitches coming out of the same window.

Mason Brandenberger, LHP/OF, Clifton HS, 2020
5-foot-10, 155-pound frame. We have seen Brandenberger pitch a ton in the past six months, and the left-hander simply continues to carve up hitters. His fastball still sat 81-83 mph with arm side run, and topping out at 86 mph. The breaking ball continues to be a solid pitch with good shape and depth at 68-70 mph, and he also mixes in a plus changeup at 77-78 mph with fastball arm speed. Pounds the strike zone, works quick, misses barrels.

Garrett Arrendondo, 3B/RHP, George Ranch HS, 2019
Arredondo is a name to remember in the junior class. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a clean, short arm stroke. His fastball sat 85-87 mph with some heavy arm side action. His breaking ball varies in shape and what he calls a slider actually varies between a curveball (72-74 mph) and more of a slider (76-77 mph). Either way, the pitch comes in with good shape and rotation, and I could see him making a jump this spring.

Braden McGary, RHP/3B, Denver City HS, 2019
McGary has a long-limbed, wiry-strong frame at 6-foot, 155-pounds. The right-hander works from a high slot with a long, loose arm slot with a quick hand out front. Athletic lower half in a tall and fall delivery, lands square. Creates angle on his fastball at 82-84 mph, with his best bolt at 85. Curveball flashes tight spin with 11/5 shape and good depth at 71-74 mph. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed and arm side fade at 74-75 mph.

Easton Malin, RHP/OF, George Ranch HS, 2019
Malin has a projectable, high-waisted frame at 6-foot-1, 193-pounds. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a loose arm stroke, drop and drive delivery, and athletic lower half. His fastball comes out clean at 82-84 mph. His curveball shows signs of becoming a quality pitch with 11/5 downer shape at 63-68 mph. His changeup has arm side fade and depth at 75-76 mph.

Pierce Levinthal, LHP/OF, Hardin-Jefferson HS, 2021
5-foot-11, 165 pound frame. The left-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long, loose arm stroke, and a smooth drop-and-drive delivery. His fastball sat 76-79 mph with slight arm side run. His curveball has depth and 1/7 shape at 63-65 mph. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed and arm side fade at 70-73 mph.

Conner Kemp, LHP, Nederland HS, 2019
Kemp has a long-limbed, wiry frame 6-foot-2, 150-pounds, with plenty of room to add strength as he continues to mature. The left-hander works from a ¾ slot with a short, whippy arm stroke. Hides the ball well as he gets down the mound with regular effort then the ball jumps out of his hand at 78-80 mph. His curveball has 1/7 shape with average depth at 62-65 mph. His slider has tighter spin at 67-69 mph with more 2/8 shape. He can throw both breaking balls for a strike, and both pitches should continue to improve as gains varsity innings and adds strength. His changeup flashes arm side fade at 72-73 mph.

Caden Queck, OF/RHP, The Woodlands Christian Academy, 2020
6-foot, 168-pounds. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a quick arm stroke. Tall and fall delivery with an athletic lower half, lands square. His fastball sat 78-81 mph with some arm side run. His curveball has 11/5 shape at 62-66 mph. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed at 69-70 mph.

Chase Blackwell, 3B/2B, Cuero HS, 2020
5-foot-11, 150-pound frame. On the mound, the right-hander works from a high slot with a short arm stroke, and a tall and fall delivery. Pumped strikes with his fastball at 75-77 mph, topping out at 78. His curveball has depth with 11/5 shape at 66-69 mph. His changeup flashes arm side run at 72-73 mph.

Juan Chavez, 2B/SS, Austin HS, 2018
5-foot-6, 170-pound frame. On the mound, the right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing. Drop and drive delivery down the mound with good hip turn at balance point. His fastball was 78-80 mph, topping out at 81. Throws his curveball at 65-66 with 11/5 shape, and a cutter at 76 mph with more lateral break. Also mixes in a 70-72 mph changeup with arm side fade and fastball arm speed.

Dylan McDonald, RHP/1B, The Woodlands College Park HS, 2019
McDonald has a strong, long-limbed, projectable pitchers frame at 6-foot-3, 190-pounds. The right-hander works from a high slot with a short arm stroke out front. Throws a heavy fastball at 77-81 mph. His slider has short 11/5 break at 71-72 mph. His changeup has good depth at 74-75 mph.
