SAN ANTONIO, TX - In the first official pre-season game of the year, the Madison Mavericks and Antonian Apaches met at Blossom Athletic Center to play seven innings on an overcast Tuesday night.

The Mavericks were missing one of the big pieces of their lineup, McLennan CC commit Jalen Battles (RHP/SS) due to basketball playoffs. Madison sent uncommitted junior RHP Derek Klosowski to the mound to start the game, and he turned in a strong 4-inning performance in which he refused to yield any runs to the Apache lineup and struck out 6.

Antonian’s starting pitcher, uncommitted LHP Trenton Reynolds, got off to a rocky start, giving up two runs in the first inning on a 2 RBI double from Madison’s senior 1B Jacob Robertson. Reynolds settled in after the first to throw three shutout innings before being relieved.

Madison turned to uncommitted senior RHP Dylan Weidenbach in the fifth inning. The Apaches were able to eliminate the two run deficit with the help of four-straight hits. Weidenbach allowed another run in the seventh inning, but was able to finish the job before Antonian could finalize the comeback, sealing the 4-3 victory for Madison.

Notable performance: Antonian’s uncommitted junior SS, Kyte McDonald, reached base safely in all four plate-appearances. McDonald drew a walk, hit a triple and a double, and finished up by reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
