Plano West Wins 3-2 Over Plano

PLANO, TX - Two crosstown rivals met on Tuesday night for a District 9-6A game. The Plano West Wolves traveled all of 4.2 miles to face off against the Plano Senior Wildcats. The host Wildcats threw the first punch of the evening when they put up a two spot off the bat of 2019 1B Anderson Acinger(NCTC), who crushed a double to left field. Then 2020 OF Jonathan Huff knocked in what looked like the second and third runs of the inning, but Acinger was called out (and ejected) for running over the catcher at the plate. Things got chippy from there for both teams and the fans, but the umpire crew and both head coaches did a nice job of keeping things under control. Plano up 2-0.

In the top of the third, it looked as if 2019 RHP Mac Cheney (Coffeyville JC) had worked out of an inning. After wallking the first two batters, he got an out on a bunt, and what looked like a possible inning ending double play. Unfortunate for him, the Wildcats did not finish the double play, and Brandon Blair made them pay with a two out RBI single up the middle. Then 2021 SS Chase Spencerdrove a hanging curveball down the left field line for a 2 RBI double. Plano West up 3-2.

After a shaky first inning, West’s starter, 2019 LHP Jack Hattrup (Baylor) got dialed in, REALLY dialed in. He retired the the next 18 batters in a row, hanging 6 HUGE zero’s on the board for the Wolves, punching out 10 during that stretch. Hattrup needed only 102 pitches to throw a complete game where he threw 75% strikes, didn’t walk a soul, and tallied 11 strikeouts.

Plano reliever 2019 RHP Quentin Frederick (Coffeyville JC) entered with one out in the fourth after 2021 OF Jacob Stephens doubled to left-centerfield. Frederick worked out of that jam and gave the Wildcats a chance to win, but the damage was already done, the one run lead was all that Hattrup and the Wolves needed to secure the victory.

Final Score: Plano West 3, Plano 2

With the win, West moves to 2-1 in district, 7-8 overall. Plano falls to 0-3 in district, 8-9 overall.

SCOUT NOTES

Jack Hattrup, LHP, Plano West HS, 2019
Baylor commit. 6-foot-4, 202-pound frame. The left-hander works from a high slot creating a different look for hitters with a medium arm swing and drop-and-drive delivery. His start was the tale of two games, the first inning, and the remaining six innings. Started out at 82-84 mph, with a 1/7 breaking ball at 71-72 mph and a changeup at 71-72 mph. Gave up a two spot in the first, but bounced back after his catcher was run over to end the inning. From the second to the seventh, Hattrup was on a mission and dialed it up, giving his best when his best was needed. He retired 18 straight batters after the first. His fastball touched 87 in the third, sitting 84-85 through four, and settled back in at the 83-84 range for the remainder of the game. Stuff is much better when he stays on top of the baseball and gets down the mound with a more aggressive delivery, creating tilt and angle on his fastball with multiple swings and misses. Pitched to both sides of the plate and pounded Plano Senior RHH’s in on their hands. Finished the game with 11 strikeouts, 10 in the last six innings, and struck out the side in the 4th after his club hung a 3 spot on the board to take the lead.
