Power 25: Week 3

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA - The High School Baseball season is in full swing in Texas. In the last week of the opening season tournaments there is a lot shuffling this week. Remaining in the Number 1 spot in our Texas Power 25 is Lake Travis. The Cavaliers are now 13-0 after two conference wins against Buda Hays, and they don’t look to be slowing down anytime soon with a stacked lineup and solid starting rotation.

The Top 5

+ Sweeny: The Bulldogs are hotter than a firecracker and rising faster than any other team in the state with a 15-0 record. Not only is Sweeny playing bigger 5A and 6A schools, but they are winning. Wins this past week over Pearland Dawson, Kempner, Jersey Village and Memorial have only added to the resume. Look out, because these guys are for real.

+ Katy: The Tigers went 4-0 this week with two wins over Klein and one over Tomball Memorial. Katy has risen steadilly in the ranking all four times, going from 25, to 9, to 6, to now at No. 3.

+ San Antonio Reagan: Since losing to Katy Taylor in week 1, they have won 13 straight, including going 7-0 last week. The pitching staff has only allowed 9 runs in those 7 games..

+ Cypress Ranch: The Mustangs went 5-1 this past week with wins over Jersey Village, Santa Fe, La Porte, Pearland, and Dickinson.

ON THE RISE

+ Coppell: We listed these guys on the rise last week. The Cowboys are 12-3 after going 4-1-1 this week against a tough schedule, including a huge win over Flower Mound. Their only loss was to No. 6 Southlake Carroll, and they tied No. 11 Prosper.

+ Colleyville Heritage: The Panthers went 5-0 this week out in Lubbock and scored 13 or more runs in all 5 games. Also, look for the lineup to get even better with the addition of Chandler Freeman.

+ Rockwall: The Yellowjackets went 4-1-1 this week with wins over Jesuit, Georgetown, and Flower Mound. Their only loss was to No. 6 Southlake Carroll.

+ Argyle: Another team that remains undefeated with a 5-0 record this past week, 12-0 overall. The Eagles allowed only 3 runs last week, and that was in one game. The offense is firing on all cylinders as they rolled past their opponents with 10 runs in their last three games.

+ Frenship: These guys keep winning. They went 4-1 last week with wins over Burleson Centennial, Waco Midway, and El Paso Socorro.

New to Ranking

+ McAllen: With a 5-0-1 week, the Bulldogs move to 14-1-1 overall, plenty good enough to make such a large jump, especially when you consider who their wins are against. They have wins over Calallen, Veterans Memorial, CC Moody and New Braunfels.

+ CC Veterans Memorial: The Eagles are tearing up south Texas with wins over SA Jonson, CC King, and a drubbing of SA Churchill.

+ El Paso Socorro: These guys can score runs, they went 4-2 this week with losses coming from Power 25 Teams Colleyville Heritage and Frenship.

+ Grapevine: I’m sure most of you are not surprised here. Grapevine is very well coached and they have a strong nucleus of talent, both young and old. The Mustangs have won 7 in a row, including a win over Keller Timber Creek.

+ Cleburne: We listed these guys as a bubble team for our Preseason ranking. The Yellowjackets have won 9 games in a row, with wins over Arlington Heights, Ft. Worth Christian, and MacArthur.

+ Copperas Cove: 14-0-2 speaks for itself. These Bulldogs went 5-0-1 last week with wins over Austin Johnson, Austin Bowie, Austin Travis and Bastrop. They have quality tests coming up in conference with San Angelo Central and Waco Midway.

+ Ft. Bend Ridge Point: At 10-4, the Panthers are quietly adding up wins over quality opponents.

ON THE BUBBLE

The list here is long and distinguished, there are numerous teams that could be in the discussion for the Top 25. A number of factors come into play, most importantly, strength of schedule, as well as quality wins and losses. This will be one we have to monitor closely throughout the rest of the season as there are a number of super-strong conferences that will likely get the nod over others.

+ Klein Collins: The Tigers are 8-3 after going 3-1 last week with marquee wins over George Ranch, Conroe and Katy Tompkins, including an early season walk-off win against Southlake Carroll.
+ Episcopal: 10-4-1 The Knights have quality wins that could get them in down the road. Including wins over Barbers Hill and Cypress Ranch this past week.

+ Dallas Jesuit: At 12-5, the Rangers have beaten some really tough opponents, but they went 2-3 last week.

+ Mansfield Legacy: 7-2-1, Coach McMullen’s club went 4-0 last week.

+ Pearland: The Oilers have one of the most competitive schedules, with big wins over Episcopal and The Woodlands.
