SEASON PREVIEW

The Bulldogs return a ton of experience from an Area Finalist team that won 20 games last year, led by a very strong junior class. Coach Durham has several front line options on the mound, including 2018 LHP Ty Ringo, who earned District Pitcher of The Year awards in '17. There is a trio of juniors that may hold the key to success on the mound. District Newcomer of The Year 2019 SS/RHP Caden Homniok is committed to Texas A&M and ranked No. 11 in Texas 2019 Class, No. 54 Overall. Last season, Homniok punched out 51 batters and recorded an ERA of 1.46. 2019 OF/RHP Quinton Martin was a 1st Team All-District selection as a hitter (BAVG .342), but the the right-hander can run his fastball up to 90 mph and spins a sharp curveball. Martin, who is committed to Rice, is also ranked No. 46 in the Texas 2019 Class, No. 228 Overall. A fellow Rice commit, 2019 RHP Jackson Kiddy, had a miniscule 0.80 ERA last season, and struck out 31 batters. 2019 Joe Effenberger was a 2nd Team All-District selection as a pitcher, after he finished the season with a 1.43 ERA.

On the offensive side of things, the Bulldogs have some thunder in the lineup and enough athleticism that they should be able to defend. Homniok and Martin can certainly produce runs, as will Blinn JC commit 2019 C Wes Folse, who hit .333 last season and drove in 20. Add in 2019 C/OF Blake Benevides, 2019 2B Cord Fillipp, and 2018 Jaden Bohlar, and the Bulldogs look strong. One thing is for sure, Sweeny plays with a toughness and grit that is tough to match. With a strong pitching staff this year, and a talented group of returners, the Bulldogs have a chance to make a deep playoff run.
