Scout Notebook: Jupiter Day 3

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

JUPITER, FL - The third day of the World Wood Bat Championship brought a lot of action for PBR Texas, as teams were on display once again in front of hundreds of scouts and college coaches. Here are some of the highlights.

+ 2018 RHP Ty Madden (Cy Ranch HS, TX), a Rice recruit, flashed premium present velocity with, it seams, more to dream on as he begins to fill into his 6-foot-3, 175-pound frame. Madden came in relief for Indians Scout Team, working from a high-¾ arm slot with short arm action, the projectable right-hander was bumping 90-92 mph on his fastball. His curveball had sharp, late, downward action at 82-83 mph.

+ 2018 RHP Mason Cooper (Robinson HS, TX), a 6-foot-2, 194-pound Texas A&M recruit, threw one inning of relief with strong arm and compact arm action. His fastball ranges from 88-90 mph, while his CB has 12-6 action at 72 mph.

+ 2017 LHP Alex Gregory Ayala (Moody HS, TX), a 5-foot-9, 155-pound, Texas A&M Corpus Christi recruit, works from a ¾ slot with long arm-action and athletic delivery. The left-hander works both sides of the plate with his fastball ranging between 83-85 mph. The fastball has some cut to his glove side when throwing inside to right-handed hitters, and arm-side run when going away. His curveball has 2-8 shape that he commands well at 74-76 mph.

+ 2018 OF/IF Brad Burckel (Lindale HS, TX), listed at 5-foot-9, 160-pound, the uncommitted junior has a plus run tool. Today he registered home-to-first times of 3.71 (bunt) and 4.19 on a hard hit ground ball to shortstop. The left-handed hitter handles the bat well and has a great feel for stealing bases. Burckel gets to full speed at an elite level, making every ball he puts on the ground a challenge for the defense. Once on base, it is a matter of time before he steals second and/or third base.

+ 2017 OF Alerick Soularie (Atascocita HS, TX) at 6-foot, 185-pounds, the Arkansas recruit is an all-around athlete with a live body. The right-handed hitter has great bat speed and presence with a clean path and loose finish. Soulaire, who registered two hits in the Houston Banditos first game of the day, also showed his athleticism on the bases, stealing second and third.
