Scout Notes From Week 2 UIL Playoffs

DALLAS, TX - The first inning was an eventful start to Friday night at Jesuit HS as the Forney Jackrabbits put up two runs in the top of the first. But Reedy answered with two runs of their own to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. 2018 RHP Mason Englert (Texas A&M) set the state-record for consecutive scoreless innings with a strikeout to start the bottom of the first, but did not get off to the same start he is accustomed to, giving up two runs on three straight doubles after breaking the record. However, he would settle down to finish the night with eleven punchouts and only one walk. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a quick arm stroke. His fastball touched 92 once in the first inning, sitting mostly 90-91 with a couple of 89’s from the stretch. Went to his offspeed a bunch in the first, giving up two of the three doubles on breaking balls (SL/CB). After the shaky start, Englert cruised for the next five innings, his fastball started to show more tilt and life at the bottom of the zone, but he was also effective at mixing in his changeup at 77-82 mph. His slider had more lateral, cutter like action with 10-4 shape at 79-80, and he works in a curveball with 12/6 rotation at 73 mph. Held his velocity throughout the outing, touching 92 in the second, and still sitting 88-90 in the sixth with late life at the bottom of the zone. Worked around several defensive miscues including a dropped third strike and a couple of routine errors. Recorded at least one strikeout in five of the six innings, including two in the fifth and sixth, and three in the first.
