South Texas Underclass Games: Outfield Analysis

COLLEGE STATION, TX - Some of the top underclass talent from around the state converged on Texas A&M on Tuesday for the South Texas Underclass Games. The event was loaded with underclass talent from the 2019, 2020, 2021 class, with a few 2018 grads sprinkled in. Here is the outfield analysis on 17 players from our event.

 

Top Performers

+ Quinton Martin, OF/RHP, Sweeny HS, 2019
Martin showcased explosive tools at the South Texas Underclass Game, and committed to Rice recently. He has a strong frame at 5-foot-11, 190-pounds with a strong lower half. Showed plus arm strength in the outfield at 93 mph and registered an exit velocity of 95 mph off the tee. During batting practice he showed plus bat speed and big power potential as he squared up balls consistently, including hitting two home runs, one to left-centerfield and another to left field (at Texas A&M). Carried that over into the game by hitting a missile to centerfield that was caught.

+ Ben Dukes, C/OF, Memorial HS, 2020
Dukes is an all-around athletic left-handed hitting catcher with an athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 190-pounds. He has the skill and athleticism to be an impact player at the next level. A left-handed hitter, Dukes has athletic hands that keep the barrel in the zone a long time. Swing works with a pronounced early load and toe-tap, then he walks away from his hands as he drifts to his front side, uncoiling with lift, bat speed, and a loose finish. Drove the ball well during batting practice with projectable power to the pull side. In the outfield, where he threw 85 mph with good carry, accuracy, and athleticism through the ball. Ran a 6.95 60-yard dash.

+ Caeden Trenkle, OF, Hillsboro HS, 2019
Oklahoma State recruit. Trenkle is a quick-twitch left-handed hitter that stands 5-foot-10, 170-pounds and started the day by posting an event best 6.79 60-yard dash. At the plate, he starts from a tall, open stance, working with early rhythm as he triggers his hands down, turning inward to land square with an easy leg lift and short stride. Quickish hands with an uphill plane and average balance. Used the whole field during batting practice with a spray type approach, also shows the ability to drive the ball to the pull side. 88 mph exit velocity off the tee. Laced a triple down the right field line during the game. Accelerates well on the bases with easy strides. In the outfield, Trenkle plays through the ball with fluid rhythm, average footwork and exchange. Throws from a high-¾ slot with accuracy and average arm strength at 85 mph.

+ Nathan Hamberg, RHP/OF, George Ranch HS, 2019
Hamberg has a projectable, long-limbed pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, with plenty of room to add strength in the coming years. A two-way player and right-handed hitter, Hamberg starts from a tall, balanced stance with loose rhythm in a high hand set. Simple swing with easy, repeatable rhythm, medium stride, lands square with leverage. Hands work easy through the zone with a repeatable path. Maintains balance as he transfers his weight through contact with a high finish and good extension through contact and average bat speed (81 mph). In the outfield, Hamberg has a good sense of timing as he plays through the ball with average hands and feet and a quick transition to throw 83 mph to the dish.

+ Tommy Ivey, OF, Kingwood Park HS, 2019
At 6-feet-1, 160-pounds, Ivey has a lean, athletic, fast-twitch frame. The rising junior began the day with a 6.92-second 60-yard dash. A right-handed hitter, Ivey has an open stance with early rhythm, working into a pronounced hitch with his hands as he loads into a leg kick. There are a lot of moving parts, but it works for him, as he lands balanced with an athletic lower half, and is on time with the barrel. Generates bat speed with loose, fast-twitch hands and quick hips. Lower half works well as he transfers his weight through contact with a high finish, creating lift and line-drive power. In the outfield, Ivey threw 86 mph from a high slot with a clean arm swing, average footwork, clean exchange and soft hands.

+ Mayan Mendez, OF, Pflugerville HS, 2019
Mendez has a lean-muscular frame at 5-foot-9, 160-pounds. The left-handed hitter has an aggressive swing with strong hands and bat speed (93 mph). He starts from a balanced stance, using a smooth load with quick rhythm as he triggers his hands down and back. Slightly dives toward the plate with a medium stride, then covers the same amount of ground with a linear lower half weight transfer. Fast hands through the zone, good approach with hard contact and gap power during batting practice. Hammered a triple to the right-centerfield gap during the game. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash, but runs with long strides around the bases. In the outfield, Mendez plays through the ball with average hands, choppy footwork and a longer exchange. He throws from long, over the top arm stroke with average accuracy and some carry at 81 mph.

+ Carson Keithley, LHP/OF, Alvin HS, 2020
Keithley is an exciting young player with a quick arm and athletic frame at 5-foot-9, 145-pound frame. A two-way player, Keithley is an athletic defender with a long stride, rhythm through the ball, soft hands and a quick exchange. The ball jumps out of his hand at 85 mph with plus carry and accuracy to the dish. A left-handed hitter, Keithley has a simple swing with a flat path and loose finish as the barrel stays in the zone a long time. Quick hands and a good sense of timing as his quick hips transfer his lower half through contact, creating good extension. With Ketihley's all-around athleticism and projectable frame, he is likely to make significant jumps in the coming years.

+ Reagan Doss, OF, Round Rock HS, 2019
Doss has an athletic, high-waisted, lean-muscular frame at 6-foot, 180-pounds. He started the day by running a 7.01 60-yard dash. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance with square shoulders and a flat bat. Slight toe-tap load as he raises the barrel to trigger his hands as he maintains posture. Hip slide weight shift, level path, choppy rhythm, strong hands, good extension through contact, loose finish of the barrel, and an exit velocity of 85 mph. In the outfield, Doss moves with confidence as he plays through the ball with long, athletic strides and quick footwork. Soft hands and clean exchange as he gathers with a crow hop to throw from a high-¾ slot with a wrap in the back. Throws with average accuracy to the plate at 85 mph.

+ Tanner Davis, OF, Angleton HS, 2019
Davis has a solid, athletic frame at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds. A right-handed hitter, Davis has swagger in his athletic setup. Lowers the knob to trigger his hands, early short leg kick to load with balance. Explosive lower half transfer, rotational swing, quick hands, average bat speed (81 mph), and line drive power. Creates lift with a high finish and average carry. In the outfield, Davis plays through the ball with athleticism, creating momentum with aggressive footwork, average hands and exchange. Throws from a high slot, short arm stroke with wrap at hand break, above average carry at 86 mph. Ran a 6.94 60-yard dash.

+ Caden Queck, OF/RHP, The Woodlands Christian Academy, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound, athletic frame. A two-way player and right-handed hitter, Queck has a simple, athletic, aggressive swing with fluid rhythm. Low-hanging leg kick to load back as his hands trigger. Lands balanced and stacked into his legs with a short stride length. Fast bat speed with quickish hands and good extension through contact. Transfers his weight aggressively with quick hips and a high finish, generating good carry during batting practice that projects well when he adds strength. In the outfield, Queck has average hands, clean exchange, and deliberate footwork with some rhythm through the ball. Throws with uphill shoulder tilt with some carry and accuracy at 82 mph.

+ Fabian Bernal, SS/OF, John Paul Stevens HS, 2019
5-foot-9, 125-pound, still developing frame. Bernal started the day by running a 7.0-second 60-yard dash. The left-handed hitter has a relaxed setup and a simple, efficient swing. Starts with an easy leg kick, lands balanced with a relaxed stride. Efficient-quick hips into his lower half transfer. Loose, quick hands with barrel awareness, finishes the barrel with easy effort. Mostly line drives during batting practice, strong top hand at contact. During the game, Bernal collected two quality at-bats during the game, laced a single to left field and then flew out sharply on the barrel to left field. In the outfield, Bernal has a quick exchange with athletic footwork after the catch as he gathers with a crow hop to throw from a high-¾ slot with a quickish arm stroke at 80 mph. Although Bernal still needs to add strength as he continues to develop, he is a quick-twitch left-handed hitter that can play multiple positions.

+ Luke Abler, OF, Kingwood HS, 2019
Abler has a high-waisted, long-limbed frame at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds. The right-handed hitter has a stacked setup with a high hand position. Quick, choppy rhythm to load with a short stride. Average balance, long path, short finish with an exit velocity of 71 mph. In the outfield, he plays through the ball with average hands, quick exchange and throws from a short, high-¾ arm stroke with some accuracy at 77 mph.

+ Bradlee Evans, OF/RHP, Bryan HS, 2018
5-foot-7, 175-pound frame. The right-hander works from a high-¾ slot with a long arm swing with average effort. Decent rhythm in a tall-and-fall delivery, lands closed with a fairly athletic lower half finish. Evans commanded the strike zone with good feel for both his fastball and changeup, retiring four in a row at one point. Fastball ranged from 72-76 mph. Throws his changeup with fastball arm speed at 68-69 mph with slight fade. His curveball has early break with lateral 10-4 shape at 68-70 mph. A two-way player and right-handed hitter, Evans starts from a balanced setup. Short stride, quick, choppy rhythm with a short stride. Contact approach during batting practice produced ground balls and shallow line drives with a 72 mph exit velocity off the tee. In the outfield, Evans has average feet and hands as he transfers into a long arm stroke with tilted shoulders, throwing 76 mph to the dish.

+ Chase Richter, LHP/OF, Cypress Woods HS, 2020
5-foot-11, 170-pound, athletic, lean-muscular frame. The left-handed hitter starts from an open, slightly crouched stance with his hands set low. Simple load, short stride, hips slide forward to transfer his weight. Short path to the ball with strong, gap-to-gap contact and a high finish. In the outfield, Richter has soft hands and plays through the ball with athleticism, quick feet and clean exchange. He throws from a high-¾ slot with a short arm stroke at 79 mph.

+ John Sanchez, OF, Yoakum HS, 2020
5-foot-7, 153-pound frame. A right-handed hitter, Sanchez starts from a balanced, wide stance. Limited load, level path, short finish, 71 mph exit velocity. In the outfield, he has fairly athletic footwork with still developing hands. Threw 72 mph to the plate from a short, high-¾ arm stroke from his ear.

+ Cameron Tobola, OF/SS, Klein Oak HS, 2019
5-foot-5, 140-pound frame. A right-handed hitter, Tobola starts from an open, tall stance, with low-set relaxed hands. Simple load with a short stride as he triggers his hands up and back. Short path as he throws the barrel with his top hand, line-drive power with average bat speed for his class (79 mph), simple rhythm, and fair approach. In the outfield, his feet work efficiently with an athletic arm swing from a high slot, creating carry and accuracy throws at 80 mph. On the infield, Tobola has average footwork and hands. Flashes range as he moves laterally with average rhythm through the ball and a gathered exchange. Accurate strike thrower to first base at 78 mph with average.

+ Chris Vann, OF/RHP, Clement HS, 2019
6-foot-2, 155-pound, lean, athletic frame. A two-way player and right-handed hitter, Vann starts from a slightly open stance, loading back into a crouch. Shorts stride, lands balanced, hands work through the zone with level path. Middle of the field approach with simple rhythm produced lots of line drives during batting practice. Even though he is listed as a shortstop, he worked out in the outfield at this event where moves with athleticism and rhythm through the ball. Fast exchange, quick footwork into a smooth, quick arm stroke from a high-¾ slot. Good arm strength, accurate thrower with carry at 85 mph.
