Spring Branch Tourney: Day 1

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

HOUSTON, TX - Looking back on some memorable moments from visiting Memorial High School and I was reminded of my time as an assistant coach at the U.S. Air Force Academy when I came to Houston to watch a talented Mustang team practice in the spring of 2011 (Ben Carl and Boomer White among others). One year ago last season I saw 2018 RHP Nicco Cole (Southlake Carroll HS/Howard JC) throw a perfect game in what was up to that point probably my favorite pitching performance I have seen since starting PBR Texas. Fast forward to Thursday evening and it was almost like the movie “Groundhog Day”. Except this time it was 2019 RHP J.J. Goss (Cypress Ranch HS) that was throwing up zeros on the scoreboard, and drawing the attention of a large number of professional scouts.

The Texas A&M commit was on a mission in Cy-Ranch’s second game of the day, carrying a no-hitter through six complete innings. The right-hander has added lean muscle mass to his lower half this off season, and appears stronger than his listed 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame suggests. Working from a high-¾ slot with a long, clean arm swing, his fastball was 93-94 in the first with late life.
