season outlook

Flower Mound High School looks to build on a regional quarter-finals appearance in 2016 with a strong senior class leading the way. The Jags return their entire infield unit and a pitching staff highlighted by one of the top arms in the state.

Right-handed pitcher and Wichita State commit, Ryan Stuempfig will be the ace of the staff. Standing 6-foot-4, 200-pounds, Stuempfig pitches in the upper-80’s with a swing-and-miss slider, and is currently ranked #95 in the PBR Draft 100. Look for sophomore left-hander Austin Wallace to also make an impact on the mound this year. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound, Texas commit, has a solid three-pitch mix with a fastball that is up to 86 mph. Senior Eric Jones will hold down the closer role for the Jags. Jones, a Weatherford JC commit, has good command of a sinking fastball and a sweeping slider that gives right-handed hitters fits. Rounding out the rest of the staff will be seniors Ryan Johnston and Dawson Abernathy along with several other newcomers.

Behind a strong pitching staff, the Jags return their entire infield from a year ago, including uncommitted junior Carson Bradley who started every game at shortstop in 2016. At third base is senior Lance Russell who was a 1st Team All District winner after batting .398 with 18 RBI. Left-handed hitting Kyle Landers is back at first base this year along with two seniors that will compete for time at second base, Cade Thomas and Dylan Antonelli.

Flower mound returns 1st Team All District outfielder and Weatherford JC commit, Syler Shepherd, who led the team in home runs and RBI last year while also batting .360. Zach Mesa, a left-handed hitter and Kansas State commit is an athletic player with pop in his bat. The Jags have big shoes to to fill behind the plate, but look for senior Brandon Messer to take charge of that role. Sophomore Austin Wallace shows promise both on the mound and at the plate, look for him to get time in the outfield as well as the DH role.

With all of this experience back on defense and a talented groups of arms, look for Flower Mound to play a very clean brand of baseball in the competitive 5-6A District.
