Utah Power 25 Rankings: Week 3 (March 21-26)

Jeff Scholzen
Utah Scouting Director

The state of Utah finished off week 3 of the HS baseball season with many games up north and the final preseason St. George tourneys at the Washington County schools. Dixie State/Dixie HS hosted the Red Rock Classic, which comprised a handful of the top 6A programs in the state pitted against each other, as well as three Las Vegas schools. One thing is for certain, baseball in the state of Utah is far superior to our neighbors across the border. Except for an upside of American Fork, Utah schools ran the table on our neighbors. Quite a few of the top players from the Beehive state were in town as well and made for some great coverage by PBR Utah. Over ½ the schools in the state form 3A-6A have made their way south in the past 3 weeks, and I was able to see the vast majority of the teams in what I call in the scouting industry as mini-observations.

For the first time since game 20 of the 2021 HS season, we have a new #1 team in the state with the Mustangs from Crimson Cliffs. American Fork has been loudly holding up the top spot for almost a year, but the Mustangs have done this with a prolific offense led by a sophomore OF and ‘21 1st team All-State banger, Trey Evans. The bats keep coming with Junior SS, Petey Soto and catcher, Brexten Starley. Soto, a Dixie State commit, is leading the state in runs, while senior CF, Logan West isn’t too far behind in the same category. The pitching has been solid as junior LH’ers, Jaivan Ross and Beau Sampson have locked things down. The Mustangs have run the table at 11-0 and are being nipped at by Pine View at 12-1, giving a southern Utah glimpse of the tandem powerhouse that was American Fork and Pleasant Grove a year ago up north. This year American Fork has played some stiff competition during the preseason, which will bode well for upcoming region play.

Some surprise teams are making their way up the rankings, while some teams of traditional power standing have fallen back somewhat. With our usual coverage of players, and spreading the video footage around social media, has prompted college recruiters to get in touch with a handful of players throughout the state today. With one player receiving an offer from BYU.

PBR Utah has spent all of our time covering the northern Utah teams down south with the sunny weather, big crowds, and the area was full of spring breakers, but now I'll make my way north beginning in April. There will be some contention amongst fans as to who belongs where, but I have personally seen the vast majority of the teams on this list, as well as their top players in showcase events for quite some time now. With that, we present week 3 of the Utah Power 25 rankings…Enjoy!
