Utah Power 25 Rankings: Week 8 (April 25 - 30)

Jeff Scholzen
Utah Scouting Director

Not much has changed up top over the last couple of weeks, as the top teams continue to pile up wins and show why they are ranked where they are. It’s a good time as any to spotlight a few players that have been on some torrid hitting streaks over the last 2-3 weeks, with some players putting up some mind boggling stats and distancing themselves from others in the race for each classifications player of the year, by the media outlets. We will also announce our PBR Utah player of the year in the middle to third week of June, and this is for the overall Player of the Year from the state from PBR.

Hitters (2)

Over the last 2 weeks these players have put up eye popping numbers, which takes MOST players to post THESE kinds of numbers an entire season to accumulate!

2023 Cade Nalder, C (Jordan) - Uncommitted

G 6 AB 20 R 9 H 13 HR 3 RBI 15 2B 2 BB 2

  • Nalder was the PBR Utah Player of the Week last week.

2023 Ryder Robinson, 2B (American Fork) - TCU Commit

G 6 AB 21 R 13 H 15 HR 4 RBI 13 2B 1 BB 1

  • Robinson is a two-time PBR Player of the Week this season

  • PBR Future Games Alum / 2021 6A 1st Team All-State

Under the Radar Spotlight

One under the radar player that we want to get involved with PBR to start aiding in his exposure is sophomore catcher from Canyon View HS, Cameron Calvez. Even though Canyon View moved down from the rigors of competing in the 4A Region on the St. George area to 3A, it should be noted, that even though the pitching is not the caliber of the St. George kids who routinely hit the upper 80’s and low to mid 90’s in a couple of cases, you still have to hit and put the numbers up, which no else is doing! Here are the overall stats for this young 16 yr old masher. Is the leading candidate for 3A Player of the Year!

2024 Cameron Calvez, C, R-R (Canyon View HS) - Uncommitted

G 23 AB 84 R 18 H 39 AVG .464 HR 8 RBI 47 2B 18 3B 2 BB 11 SO 10

OB% 526 SLG% 1.011 OPS: 1.538

That’s 28 extra base hits, that leads the state by a WIDE margin, along with a state leading 18 2B’s and 47 RBI!! Almost ⅔ of the state doesn’t have 28 hits, let alone 28 extra base hits. It’s safe to say that after facing 6 arms as a freshman in St. George in 2021, that touched or exceeded 90 mph, it prepared Calvez for the bump down to less stressful arms. But one thing holds true even at that level, nobody else is doing this and that has to be taken into consideration.

One thing to always remember as a player, that players such are the examples of Nalder and Robinson, is they have been on the radar for quite some time, as they have attended events, stayed engaged and their parents and others have kept me in the circle of their exploits with texts, calls, video messages and emails, of which top producing players should be doing. So they have been identified early enough, that when they put up big numbers as they have for a couple of years now, they get recognized and others around the area, region and nationally know who they are. But every now and then a player puts up numbers that can’t be denied and one has to take notice, such as Calvez.

Of Note: The odds of this happening are only two to three players per year in the state. So setting goals to achieve such numbers as Calvez are highly unlikely, it’s why you as the player have to get to PBR player events EARLY and if identified as a potential next level player, whether at the JC, NAIA, D3, D2 or D1 levels, it behooves a player to come often to events 2-3 times a year, be engaged on twitter and market yourself with our PBR data platform, so that you are now on the radar for others like myself and college coaches to take notice! They need to know who you are, long before the day comes, when eye popping hitting/pitching numbers as well as FB velocities pop, so that you can get the critical attention YOU so deserve!
