On July 22nd and 23rd,  Prep Baseball Report Virginia/DC hosted the 2017 Top Prospect Games at English Field on the campus of Virginia Tech.  Some of the best 2017's in the Commonwealth showcased their skills for various colleges and the PBR staff. Here is the outfield analysis from the event...

2017 TOp Prospect games: outfield analysis

Trey Campbell, OF, Paul VI, 2017
Hit from an athletic, balanced stance.  Smooth load back.  Stride was controlled and stayed on line.  Lower half collapses.  Maintained balance throughout swing.  Quick, explosive hands.  Bat exit velocity of 88 MPH.  Good approach to the round.  Level swing path with good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap to gap power.  Fluid rhythm.  In the field threw from a long and loose ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 78 MPH.  Soft hands with fluid footwork that played through the ball.  Exchanges were quick and clean.

Kye Colza, OF,  Robert E. Lee, 2017
Hit from a tall, balanced stance.  Smooth load back with arm bar.  Toe tap stride that stays on line and balanced.  Tends to slightly jump up on stride.  Balance maintained throughout swing.  Bat exit velocity of 69 MPH.  Swing path drags through the zone and cuts across the ball.  Level, line drive swing path.  In the field, threw from a long and loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 77 MPH.  Soft hands with good glove presentation.  Footwork was clean and fluid.  Played through the ball.

Jack Darden, OF, Smithfield, 2017
Hits from a stacked stance with back knee bowed in and posture leaning back.  No load back since he is stacked on his backside.  Slight arm bar.  Short, controlled stride that stays on line.  Lower half is violent.  Balance maintained throughout swing.  Explosive hands, bat exit velocity of 98 MPH.  Good approach to the round.  Swing path is level with good extension.  At times can work uphill.  Gap to gap swing with pull power.  Rhythm gets stiff at times.  In the field, threw from a long, high ¾ arm slot that was slightly stiff. Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 80 MPH.  Footwork was clean, but heavy at times. Played through the ball. 

Connor Hartigan, OF, Millbrook, 2017

Hit from a narrow stance that was tall and balanced.  Good rhythm in his hands.  Slight load back.  Stride was short and controlled.  At times strided to an open front foot.  Explosive hands that displayed a bat exit velocity of 96 MPH.  Lower half explodes to ball when he stays in his legs.  Maintained balanced throughout swing.  Swing path worked uphill and to pull side.  Swing has pull power.  Rhythm got stiffen at times.  Loosening him up and developing a smooth rhythm should allow him to be a consistent hitter with his explosive bat speed.  In the outfield, threw from a long and loose high ¾ arm slot.  Positional velocity of 88 MPH.  Throws had accuracy and life.  Displayed soft hands with footwork that was quick and fluid.  Played through the ball and exploded with his legs on his throws.  Athletic outfielder with good feel for his footwork.

Noah Lerman, OF, Paul VI, 2017
Hit from an balanced, athletic stance that was slightly open.  Smooth load back with a controlled stride that got back on line.  Good lower half turn to the baseball.  Displayed quick, explosive hands with a bat exit velocity of 86 MPH.  Good approach to the round.  Fluid rhythm.  Swing path was level and had good extension.  Line drive hitter with gap to gap power.  In the field, threw from long, loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 76 MPH.  Soft hands with quick and clean exchanges.  Footwork was fluid and worked through the ball.

Sean McQuillan, OF, Green Hope (NC), 2017
Hit from a crouched stance that was stacked on backside.  Slight load back with smooth stride that stays on line.  Good lower half turn to the baseball.  Sometimes sits on backside.  Maintains balance throughout swing.  Bat exit velocity of 81 MPH.  Good approach to the round.  Short, level swing path that had extension.  Line drive hitter with gap to gap power.  Fluid rhythm throughout swing.  In the field, threw from a long, loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Positional velocity of 78 MPH.  Soft hands with clean, fluid footwork.  Played through the ball.

Rodney Pierce, OF, Surry, 2017

Hit from an athletic stance that was wide and slightly crouched.  Hands positioned high.  No load back with arm bar.  Slight leg kick stride that stays on line.  Drifts to front side making back side collapse.  Maintained balance throughout swing.  Quick hands that had a bat exit velocity of 83 MPH.  Swing path was level through the zone.  Line drive hitter.  Rhythm was fast and stiff.  In the field, threw from a short, high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had accuracy.  Average arm strength with a positional velocity of 79 MPH.  Average hands with footwork that was quick and clean.  Showed some athleticism and quickness with his footwork.  Played through the ball.

Tre'von Smith, OF, Orange, 2017
Hit from a balanced, athletic stance.  Load back with arm bar.  Good rhythm in hands.  Short stride that stays on line.  Good lower half turn to the baseball.  At times falls off line with front foot during swing.  Explosive hands with a bat exit velocity of 97 MPH.  Good approach to the round.  Level swing path with good extension.  Gap to gap swing with pull power.  In the field, threw from a long and loose high ¾ arm slot.  Throws had some accuracy.  Positional velocity of 79 MPH.  Average hands.  Footwork methodical at times.  Clean exchanges.
