The VISAA Division II preview features eight teams, including the defending State Champion, Greenbrier Christian. Will we have another new state champ in 2025? See notes and spotlights below.

VISAA Division II Previews:

Atlantic Shores Christian

2024 Record: 19-11-1 *VISAA DII State Runner-Up*

The Seahawks got hot at the right time heading into the VISAA championships making an appearance in the VISAA II championship eventually falling just short of a state title to Greenbrier Christian. In 2025 they bring back a bulk of returners that helped lead them to a state championship appearance. Seniors Brett Beasley (ECU) and Patrick Dudley (South Carolina) are the two headed monster on the mound that gives the Seahawks a good chance each time out. Ty Woods (Eastern Mennonite), Jake Armstrong (Misericordia), Malcolm Forbes, Ezekiel Medrano, Braylan Pitscheneder, and Angelo Banks look to provide some valuable experience and depth this spring. Senior backstop Ross Horne comes off a VISSA second team All-State selection that provides value behind the dish and in the middle of the lineup as well. With a very veteran group, they look to take a trip back to the VISAA II championship.

Covenant School

2024 Record: 9-9

Coming off of a .500 year, Covenant returns every player from the 2024 squad. Hudson Reese should be the bell cow for Covenant. Reese contributes both in the middle infield and on the mound. In addition to Reese, sophomores Evan Pariseau, Latham Clark, Jay Lineweaver, and Phillip Venton are likely to make significant contributions.

Greenbrier Christian

2024 Record: 24-5 *VISAA DII State Champions*

The Gators had a spectacular 2024 season that included a VISAA II state title and looks to do the same in 2025. They graduated some key pieces from that championship run, but also returned some as well. Hunter Langston (Hampden-Sydney), Jackson Okonkwo (Old Dominion), and Tucker Rupe (Lynchburg) are seniors that should make an impact on the mound, as well as offensively. Thomas Conrad (VMI) will be a key contributor offensively and patrolling the outfield. Ryan Watson came up in some big spots as a freshman in 2024 and looks to build upon that in 2025. There is a good mixture of experience and some young players that have bright futures, but there are some potential question marks, especially up the middle of the field, that need to be answered. Will those new faces be ready to establish a role that could help push the Gators back to another state title run in 2025?

Highland School

2024 Record: 25-6-1

Highland had a successful 2024, but ultimately lost in the VISAA II semifinals to Atlantic Shores. As recent history suggests, Highland heads into 2025 with one of the most talented rosters in the state and they are looking to hoist another state championship trophy. Stephen Christopher (William & mary) and Weston Lillard (Virginia Tech) are seniors that look to throw some big innings for the Hawks this spring. The offense returns some firepower with Benjy Cardone (VMI), Christian Dart (Roanoke), Brooks Graham (William & Mary), Joey Rogers (Wingate), and Justin Summers (William & Mary). The Hawks have a trio of talented newcomers in Ethan Hudson, Jake Gunning, and Matthew McCauley (Richmond) that gives them some depth and can provide value throughout the season. There is easy to spot talent throughout this roster that again, puts them as early favorites to hoist the trophy in May.

Nansemond-Suffolk

2024 Record: 12-13

While it was an up and down year for the Saints in 2024, they showed some flashes of what they could be. They picked up some quality wins against Atlantic Shores and Benedictine last season. They graduated a handful of notable players from last season in Jackson Runyon (Virginia Tech), Hayden Jones (Methodist), Carson Wetmore (Ferrum), and Matthew Elswick (Randolph Macon). However, the Saints also return some key pieces for 2025. Senior Gavin Angelillo can provide some explosive offense, as well as being a workhorse on the mound for the Saints. Cam Bergen and Joseph Petry are key pieces that return that provide some offense at the top of the order. Noah Brooks and Cole Goodman played significant roles as freshmen in 2024 and look to build on that going into their sophomore year. There is upside to this offense, but they will need to fill some big innings on the mound that will be missing with some of their graduating pieces from last season.

North Cross

2024 Record: 11-13

The arm of Tristan Lange leads the Raiders to where they will end up. He is the workhorse and their success, to be honest, basically starts and ends with him. Lange’s numbers in 2024 were absurd and if there is an uptick in the help surrounding him, the Raiders could challenge some teams. He is one of the best uncommitted arms in the state, and honestly had one of the most dominant seasons last year when you look at what he was able to do versus some teams that had more roster talent. Hanchen Ou is another junior on this North Cross roster who has played a large role in the past. Ou garnered some postseason honors on the mound and hits in the front part of their order. The Raiders will need to show a much improved offense, especially versus better teams and arms, if they want to challenge for a postseason tournament run.

Steward School

2024 Record: 7-13

There were growing pains for the Spartans in 2024, but they return some pieces that give them a chance to improve in 2025. Senior Brian Archer (George Washington) will be a very important piece, as he will take care of the every day duties behind the dish as well as providing some offense in the heart of the order. Cayden Diatelevi (CNU) can provide some electric offense and be a big run producer as well, but will he be able to throw some big innings as well? Carson King returns for his sophomore year with some experience, as he was the everyday shortstop as a freshman. Reed Coppola is another sophomore that looks to take on a bigger role and provide some value for the Spartans this spring. While mound depth is a question, this is a team that is well coached year in and year out that you can never count out.

Trinity Christian School of Fairfax

2024 Record: 11-4

Trinity Christian finished 11-4 last season, but will have some major turnover, returning only three players both positionally and on the mound. Isaac Norman was the VCAC Player of the Year and is only a junior. Seniors Ethan Tiede, Brody Frank, and Ryan Gardner should also play major roles this season. Sophomore Yireh Yoon was 2nd Team All-Conference last season and is the top returning arm on this staff. He should be joined by fellow sophomore Lucas Fisher as an arm that could contribute this year. Another three sophomores that have a chance to make their presence known are the likes of Phillip Long, Graham Stephenson, and Grady Frank. There’s a chance for Trinity Christian to repeat again in the VCAC, but in order to challenge in VISAA DII they will need to find some depth on the mound.
