For the next two weeks we will roll out our Preseason Power 25. We will release three teams per day for the first week and then move to two teams per day once we reach the Top 10 next week. Voting for preseason teams centers more around the depth of talent on that team, as well as where it stacks up within their region/area, as opposed to strictly predicting schedule outcomes. Our staff weighs ten different categories (i.e. offensive depth, impact players, frontline arm, pitching staff depth, sustained program success, etc).

Generally, larger schools and classifications have a greater depth of player talent on roster. However, once the season begins and records begin to take shape, the Power 25 will be adjusted as needed. In addition to that, we will debut our Private School Top 10 around the beginning of April and the Small School Top 10 around mid-April. This will allow teams to settle in and schedule to begin to shake out. Our first overall Power 25 update, due to the VHSL season being pushed back a week, will come Monday, March 31st.

#12: Cape Henry Collegiate Dolphins

Season Preview:

While Cape did not suffer a ton of loss in terms of number of players from the 2024 squad, the significance of those losses is tremendous. All-everything Tanner Schaedel moved on the Old Dominion, lock down centerfielder and middle of the order bat Andrew Hart is at NJIT, and middle of the order bat Nate Jensen is now at Chapman University. Seniors led the team in virtually every offensive and pitching category for the Dolphins. The good news, Colin Lebel (George Washington) is back and should serve as staff ace, cousins Ryan (Randolph-Macon) and Noah Hummel (Navy) are back and will add depth on the mound and in the lineup, and they return much of the latter half of the lineup from 2024. Chris Martinez could anchor shortstop and be a steadying presence there, Reid Downs does a really good job of setting the table at the top of the order, and they have some talented underclassmen that could play larger roles this year. Senior Trajan Taylor (Mars Hill) and sophomore Copeland Smith could both see expanded roles on the mound and Ryan Dobrinsky should also return behind the plate for Cape. What kind of innings can some of the arm depth bring to the table, and is it enough to take down some of the firepower that lies inside of VISAA DI?

Final Thoughts:

"Replacing Jensen, Hart, and Schaedel in the lineup will be no easy task. This year Cape has more hit tool than run production types of bats. They are athletic and have some pitching depth. Lebel will need to stay healthy because when he is 100%, he makes this staff a little different than without him. They have some advanced runners that can get on base, but guys like Lebel and the Hummels will probably need to anchor the middle of that lineup and replace the production from those three graduating bats."
