Committed Combine: Pitcher Breakdown

On July, 22 committed players from all corners of the Commonwealth took part in our Committed Combine. We begin our detailed breakdown of those players today with the pitchers:

Matthew Buchanan LHP / OF / Lebanon, VA / 2021

Buchanan is a Virginia commit and is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, hands break long and arm shortens up during stroke, loose quick action and easy effort to his delivery. Shoulders are slightly uphill and closed, lands slightly closed with a bit of a fall off finish. Delivery creates angle, hides ball well. Fastball was 86-88, touching 89, with downward plane and some late armside run. Curveball had good armspeed and was 73-75 with hard 1/7 break to it, some shape, flashes swing and miss.

Jason Cheifetz RHP / OF / Westfield, VA / 2022

Cheifetz is a James Madison commit and is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some strength present in the lower half and some projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short loose very quick arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands closed with a bit of a fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 87-89, with some downward plane and hard late armside run. Curveball had good armspeed and was 70-72 with hard late 11/5 break to it, some shape. Showed a slider with late 10/4 break. Change-up had good armspeed and heavy two-plane fade to it.

Ryan Cook RHP / 3B / Fort Defiance, VA / 2021

Cook is a James Madison commit and is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short free quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands square with a bit of a fall off finish and recoil. Fastball was 82-83, touching 84, with some late armside run. Curveball had good armspeed and was 72-73 with gradual late 11/5 break to it and some shape, has potential to tighten up into a good pitch. Change-up was 77-79 had good armspeed and heavy run to it.

Caleb Grizzard LHP / OF / Cosby, VA / 2022

Grizzard is an Old Dominion commit and is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish. Fastball was 83-85, with some late armside run. Curveball had good armspeed and was 71-74 with sharp 1/7 break to it and good shape, flashes swing and miss. Change-up was 79-80 had good armspeed and heavy armside run with some depth to it

Luke Hanson SS / RHP / Lafayette, VA / 2022

Hanson is a Virginia commit and is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and some effort to his drop and drive delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 86-87, with some late hard armside run. Curveball was 70-71 and had sharp 11/5 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 77-79 with good armspeed and heavy sink with some run to it.

Chase Hustead RHP / OF / Hanover, VA / 2022

Hustead is a James Madison commit and is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, very short loose quick arm action and some effort to his drop and drive delivery. Shoulders are uphill and slightly closed, lands open with an athletic finish. Fastball was 86-87, touching 88, with some downward plane and late hard armside run. Curveball was 72-74 and had sharp hard 11/5 break and good armspeed, flashed swing and miss when down. Change-up was 79-80 with good armspeed and late hard fade to it.

Seth Keller SS / RHP / HANOVER , VA / 2022

Keller is an Old Dominion commit and is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action and high effort to his delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 87-88, touching 89, with some hard armside run. Curveball was 72-74 and had late hard 10/4 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 74-76 with good armspeed and heavy armside run to it with some depth. Slider was 73-76.

Cannon Peebles C / RHP / Hanover, VA / 2022

Peebles is an Old Dominion commit and is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, very short free very quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with a slight fall off finish and recoil. Fastball was 85-87, touching 88, with some boring action. Curveball was 73-74 and had late 11/5 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 76-79 with good armspeed and hard late armside run to it.

Ed Wagner RHP / SS / Highland, VA / 2021

Wagner is a George Washington commit and is 6-5 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, long loose quick arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and slightly closed, lands slightly open with an athletic finish. Fastball was 89-91, with downward angle and boring action to armside. Curveball was 76-78 and had sharp 11/5 break and good armspeed and some shape. Change-up was 78-79 with good armspeed and hard armside run to it.

Jay Woolfolk RHP / SS / Benedictine, VA / 2021

Woolfolk is a Virginia commit and is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, long loose very quick arm action and some effort to his drop and drive delivery. Shoulders are level and closed, lands open with a fall off finish. Fastball was 90-92, with late hard run to armside. Curveball was 73-74 and had sharp 11/5 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 79-81 with good armspeed and heavy two plane fade to it.
