A warm humid Tuesday night saw playoff baseball in Woodbridge as the Vikings hosted Hylton in a Cardinal District quarterfinal game, with a 6C Region bid on the line. Woodbridge would jump out early and cruise to a 7-0 victory as junior righthander Magnus Ellerts put together a dominant performance.

In the bottom of the first, Woodbridge got on the board as Jakobe Anderson doubled with one out and an intentional walk put a second runner on. Ian Briddell doubled into the leftfield corner, driving in the Vikings’ first run. Hunter Steel followed that up with a double of his own, giving Woodbridge a 2-0 lead and chasing Hylton starter Justin Johnson.

In the second inning, Woodbridge would add two more runs, with the first one coming on Anderson RBI single. Woodbridge led 4-0 after two complete innings. After that, Hylton freshman reliever Diego Barrett was able to settle in and keep Woodbridge off of the board in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Ellerts was exceptional. He was perfect through four innings, striking out the first five hitters of the game and eight in the first four innings. Hylton was finally able to get some offense going in the fifth as Hayden King and Daniel Hupart (Eastern Mennonite) each delivered one-out singles, but Ellerts was able to get his tenth and eleventh strikeouts to end the threat.

The Vikings would get through to Barrett in the bottom of the sixth, adding three more runs. The game went into a lightning delay as Ellerts was taking the mound for the seventh. After waiting for about 15 minutes and looking at impending storms, the game was ruled official in six innings, with Woodbridge winning 7-0 and advancing to a matchup with rival Forest Park in the District semifinals.

For Hylton, King and Hupart were each 1-2, and King threw 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, and 1 K. Johnson took the loss and Barrett went 5.2 IP, 5 R, 5 H, 5 BB, 5 K but pitched better than his line.

For Woodbridge, Ellerts earned the win, with 6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 13 K. Anderson was 2-4 with 2 R, a 2B, an RBI, and a SB. Will Pope was 0-1 with 3 BB. Briddell was 2-3 with a 2B, 2 RBIs, and a BB. Joseph Borrero (Patrick Henry CC) was 2-2 with a 2B, BB, an RBI, and 2 Rs.
