Championship Saturday got underway at Deep Run High School with the Class 5 Championship game between Prince George and Potomac. The Royals would take an early lead and then break the game open in the third before cruising to an 8-0 win and the State Championship.

Prince George’s offense got a quick start against Potomac starter Brody Mack when Tevin Tucker (West Virginia) reached with a one-out infield single and then quickly stole second and third base. Tucker then scored when Justin Starke (VMI) grounded out to first to give Prince George an early 1-0 lead.

The Royals broke the game open in the top of the third when Quincy Sippio led off with a single to left and Tucker’s speed forced a rushed throw on a bunt attempt, sending Sippio to third and allowing him to reach. Starke singled to right-center, driving in a run and sending Tucker to third. The Royals executed a first and third double steal, scoring Tucker from third and sending Starke around to third when the throw got away at second. Starke scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0 and Potomac went to the bullpen for Josue Cumba. Cumba was welcomed to the game by Evan Kozen, who mashed the third pitch he saw for a home run to left and Prince George led 5-0.

The Royals added an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Jonathan Walton (Ferrum) sacrifice fly and two more runs in the seventh.

The story of the game was Prince George junior starting pitcher Buck Forbes. Forbes went the distance and the only baserunner that he allowed was on a Scrappy Cleveland bunt single in the top of the fourth. Forbes issued no walks and struck out seven, including the last hitter of the game to clinch the State Championship.

Tucker was 2-3 with 3 SBs and a BB. Starke was 1-3 with 2 RBIs, a BB and a SB. Sippio was 2-4 with a sacrifice. Kozen was 1-4 with his home run.
