Freshmen Free Central: Catcher Breakdown

In late February, over 80 players from all corners of DC and Virginia descended on RockIt Sports in Richmond, Virginia for the Freshmen Free Central, our second event of 2021. Today, we continue our breakdown of the event with the primary catchers:

Caleb Dennis C / RHP / Currituck , NC / 2024

Dennis is 5-11 with a strong athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, short smooth load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with strength at contact point, showed a pull approach with some gap power potential in the future, natural loft in his swing, exit velocity was 82. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action, position velocity was 71 and pop times 2.27-2.43. Receiving, he gets low with one knee down and works up to the ball, showed some sway receiving and hands present ball well. Ran a 4.32 home to first.

 

 

 

Lucas Edwards C / OF / Matoaca, VA / 2025

Edwards is 5-4 with an athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, short leg kick stride on line, minimal load back, slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, with some doubles power potential, exit velocity was 83. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short free arm action, position velocity was 71 and pop times 2.17-2.32. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, he gets low with one knee down and works up to the ball, showed some sway receiving and soft hands receiving the ball. Showed versatility taking balls in the outfield as well. Ran a 3.95 home to first.

 

 

Seth Harrison C / RHP / Matoaca, VA / 2025

Harrison is 5-7 with a strong athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, short smooth load back, quiet rhythm to his set-up. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, level line drive swing with a strong contact point and extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap, some power is present to his pull side, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action, position velocity was 73 and pop times 2.23-2.38. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, low crouch, hands work well inside his framework. Ran a 4.44 home to first.

 

 

Jacob Lee C / RHP / Matoaca, VA / 2024

Lee is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open relaxed athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, smooth load down and back to a slight bar. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing with a very strong contact point and good extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap, easy power is present in the middle of the field with more in the tank as he develops, exit velocity was 96. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short loose quick arm action, position velocity was 78 and pop times 1.98-2.08. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, varies stance, sways his body with his glove. Ran a 4.15 home to first.

 

 

Mason Lynn C / 3B / Broadway , VA / 2024

Lynn is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, two step stride on line, smooth load back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, level line drive swing, showed a good approach working gap to gap, exit velocity was 83. Behind the plate, gains ground during exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, long arm action, position velocity was 68 and pop times 2.34-2.48. Receiving, gets deep in stance, tracks ball to glove. Showed versatility working out in the infield as well. Ran a 4.61 home to first.

 

 

Bryce Neely C / SS / St. Christophers, VA / 2025

Neely is 5-7 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, leg kick stride on line, smooth load back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, uphill swing path with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with some natural loft in his swing that generates power and carry to his pull side, exit velocity was 84. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 70 and pop times 2.13-2.19. Receiving, drops into block quickly and corrals ball effectively. Showed versatility working out in the infield as well. Ran a 4.31 home to first.

 

 

Randy Richeson C / RHP / Clover Hill, VA / 2024

Richeson is 5-7 with a strong athletic frame. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, short stride open, short smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path with strength at contact point and extension through the ball, showed a good approach working gap to gap with some natural loft in his swing, power potential present, exit velocity was 83. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 2.08-2.56. Receiving, works from one knee to get low, works up to ball and shows some sway. Ran a 4.53 home to first.

 

 

Ray Roberts C / 1B / Clover Hill, VA / 2024

Roberts is 6-1 with a lanky athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, short stride on line, short smooth load up and back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, quick to the ball, uphill swing path with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap with natural loft in his swing, power potential present, exit velocity was 85. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 74 and pop times 2.14-2.35. Showed accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works from one knee or in a deep stance, shows some sway. Ran a 4.51 home to first.

 

 

Seth Truesdale C / OF / Cosby, VA / 2024

Truesdale is 5-10 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a balanced athletic stance, strides in place, short load up and back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill line drive swing path with extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap with natural loft in his swing, extra base power present with more in the tank, exit velocity was 88. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 72 and pop times 2.03-2.21. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works from one knee, shows sway keeping body behind the ball. Showed versatility working out in the outfield. Ran a 4.28 home to first.

 

 

Luke Warner C / OF / Hanover, VA / 2024

Warner is 5-10 with a lankier athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from a slightly open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load up and back to a wrap. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, goes straight to the ball, level line drive swing path with some extension through the ball, showed a good approach working primarily gap to gap with natural loft in his swing, exit velocity was 73. Behind the plate, gains ground during exchange, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 65 and pop times 2.23-2.44. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Receiving, works from a good deep crouch, shows sway keeping body behind the ball. Showed versatility working out in the outfield. Ran a 4.65 home to first.
