Madison Wins Vienna Rivalry Game

A humid April night saw Oakton and Madison face off in a District showdown. The game would stay tight early before Madison exploded for a big fourth inning en route to an 11-4 win in the Vienna rivalry. Senior LHP Matt Howatt (William & Mary) set the pace on the mound for Madison as he compiled 8 strikeouts, allowed 1 hit and 0 runs, in the first four innings for the Warhawks. Oakton’s Senior LHP Seth Richards (Villanova) battled out of early inning jams, keeping the game scoreless through three.

The game broke open in the fourth inning as Carson Hoffman, Colin Tuft, David Favero, and Mason Satterfield all had RBIs in the inning, helping Madison take a 7-0 lead and knocking Richards out of the game.

Oakton answered with 4 runs (2 earned) in the bottom of the fifth inning on doubles by Allen Yager and Davis Kelley. Three Oakton pitchers finished out the game for the Cougars: Jack Whipp, 1IP, 1R, 1H; Michael Michallas, 1.2IP, 4R; and Drew Nesmith, 1.1IP, 0R. 2K’s. Oakton was led offensively by Julian Heitman who went 3-for-3, with a double.

Madison added to the lead with a run in the fifth inning and 3 runs in the sixth. Offensive leaders for Madison were: Hoffman, double, 2RBIs; Luke Erdmann (Washington & Lee), 2-for-3; Favero double, RBI; Satterfield, double, 2RBIs; and Ryan Murphy, 2-for-3, double 2RBI’s. Senior LHP Zach Perkins (Washington & Lee) pitched a scoreless sixth inning and Michael Schultz worked around a couple walks and closed out the game with 3 strikeouts.
