This past Saturday Mills Godwin held their annual jamboree scrimmage and this year they hosted Liberty Christian and Thomas Dale. It was a cold and windy day for baseball. Like the temperature, we saw some some velocities from pitchers take a little dip therefore we are only going to highlight a few of the arms and a couple positional players from the day.

Thomas Dale

Raphael Rodriguez SS Thomas Dale 2020 (Norfolk State)

Really showed off his defensive ability on the day. Arm strength across from the left side is average, but he really makes up for it with a quick exchange and throw from any arm slot with comfort. Looks really good coming forward on balls and making plays on the run. Easy level path swing at the plate. Contact approach with line drive tendency, but has some doubles power in the swing with the speed to stretch an extra bag when needed. Had a triple to right center field on the day.

Mills Godwin

Bryce Safferwich SS Mills Godwin 2020 (JMU)

Physical shortstop with plenty of arm strength to stay on the left side. Quick first step and great angles on approach. Made some tough plays to both sides. Offensively had one hard line drive into center and was easy to see his physical strength at the plate.

Josh Trentadue LHP/1B Mills Godwin 2020 (Southern Virginia)

Definite two way potential. Showed some pop at the plate with a RBI double to deep right center. On the mound Trentadue was 82-84 and touched 85 mph with a fastball that worked to both sides of the plate. I could easily see the fastball bumping up a few miles per hour on a better day. Had solid feel for a 67-69 mph breaking ball with 1/7 shape. Is going to be an important arm for Godwin this year. Is efficient around the zone and has good enough stuff to consistently get deep into games.

Luke Calveric 3B/RHP Mills Godwin 2022

Long thin athletic frame with plenty of room to add strength. At the plate swings with a short level path, stays inside the ball well, and had two hits through the left side. Line drive tendency to the swing and swing has a chance to hit for high average with power potential once he adds strength to the frame. Appeared to have solid actions defensively, but didn't get any live plays while at third base. On the mound Calveric was 79-82 mph with an easy effort delivery. Fastball showed some nice arm side run. Could be an important arm for Godwin this year and is a definite follow as he continues to add arm and overall physical strength.

Liberty Christian

Quade Tomlin SS Liberty Christian 2020 (Liberty)

Fluid defender at short, arm strength across, and accuracy from any slot. At the plate has zone discipline and a planned approach every at bat. Quick hands and showed ability to turn on a ball when needed. Had one hit on the day with a line drive to left center field where his hands stayed inside and barrel stayed in zone through contact.

Luke Ramsey RHP/OF Liberty Christian 2020

On the mound showed a lot of promise. As previously noted everyone's velocity seemed a bit down with the cold weather and wind, but Ramsey sat 84-86 mph and he worked with intent. Fastball came out the hand well and while he could not locate the breaking ball it flashed hard 11/5 shape and some swing and miss potential. At the plate Ramsey had a multi hit day and used the whole field in his at bats. Is a very interesting prospect with some 2-way potential, but is a definitely an arm that should draw some attention this spring as I could see him in the upper 80's on a better day.

Bailey Reynolds 3B/1B Liberty Christian 2020

Reynolds can flat out hit. Raw power potential with a high contact rate. I do not think in 6+ at bats that he had a single swing and miss on the day. Showed some power potential to all fields, ability to turn on it to the pull side, and an advanced feel for the barrel. Had a double to deep right center, line drive single, and a homerun out of center. Defensively is a solid defender at third base, but I think if he continues to play at the next level the higher level he plays at he may have to move to first or a corner outfield spot.

Logan Duff C Liberty Christian 2022

Interesting catching prospect. Showed some flexibility in the hips, glove worked well at the bottom of the zone, and displayed some hand strength while handling some arms that were up to 88 mph. Clean controlled exchange and throws from a high arm slot with a short arm action. Average arm strength and had a 2.1 in game pop. At the plate is more of a contact bat right now. Hands load to an arm bar and slight bat wrap. Level path through the zone. Had a sacrifice fly on the day.

Brock Duff RHP Liberty Christian 2021

Pounded the strike zone with two pitches. Fastball sat 80-83 mph and had some downhill plane to it at times. Solid feel for an 11/5 breaking ball that he could get in the zone just about any time he wanted. Breaking ball sat 69-71 mph. Is a strike thrower that is going to pitch to contact and flashed ability to stay out of the middle third of the plate with both pitches.
