The Preseason All-State was hosted by Virginia Sport Complex on Saturday, February 17th. Over 100 players from around the Commonwealth came to be apart of the biggest event in Virginia history and the talent on display was equally impressive. We will finish our analysis of the event with the pitchers.

Geo Rivera RHP / OF / Lafayette, VA / 2019 Rivera is an Old Dominion commit and is 6-3 with an athletic frame that still has projection to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a longer arm action that is free is and very quick, generates velocity with normal effort, can get a bit more when he amps the effort up. Shoulders uphill and closed, swings leg into an on line landing, slight fall off finish with some recoil. Fastball was 88-90, with some plane and hard late boring action to armside. Curveball was 76-77 with hard 11/5 break, pitch can still sharpen some more as he throws it harder. Slider was 79-82 with sharp late break, some 10/4, some downer, good armspeed. Change-up was 79-81 with some late fade to it and good armspeed. All four pitches have a chance to be very good, still some developing left to do.

 

 

Matthew Kleinfelter RHP / 3B / Lancaster, VA / 2019 Kleinfelter is a James Madison commit and is 6-1 with a strong athletic frame, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose, quick arm action, generates velocity with easy effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands closed with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 86-88 with good downward plane and late sink to it. Change-up was 80-82 with heavy fade and was thrown with some armspeed. Curveball was 72-74 with sharp hard 11/5 break and good armspeed.

 

 

Michael Grupe RHP / 3B / Loudoun Valley, VA / 2019 Grupe is 6-2 with an athletic frame that has some projection left. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a long loose arm action that is quick and easier effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 86-89 with some downward angle and late hard run to it. Curveball was 70-72 with some armspeed and late sharp 11/5 break. Change-up was 77-79 with good armspeed and some late run to it.

 

 

Trey Carter OF / RHP / Carlisle, VA / 2020 Carter is 6-3 with a lanky frame that is projectable and he still has plenty of room to add strength to. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short back side arm action that is a bit stiff, low elbow, lightning fast arm stroke with great length at release, normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are level and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 86-88 with good downward angle and some late run on the ball. Change-up was 70-73 with some fade, he slowed his arm a bit to throw it. Breaking ball was 68-71 and was thrown with armspeed and 11/5 action.

 

 

Mason Delane RHP / SS / Colonial Beach, VA / 2019 Delane is 6-4 with a lankier athletic frame and a lot of projection left. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a shorter loose arm action that is quick, throws with some effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with a fall off finish. Fastball was 85-87 with good downward plane and a bit of late run to it. Curveball was 71-72 with later sharp 10/4 break and some armspeed. Change-up 76-80 with good armspeed and some run to it.

 

 

William Pickford RHP / Bishop O'Connell, VA / 2019 Pickford is 6-5 with an athletic frame that still has projection to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a very short loose arm action that is real quick and some effort. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 85-88 with downward plane and some late boring action to it. Curveball was 69-72 with some armspeed and later hard 12/6 break. Change-up was 78-79 with good armspeed and some run.

 

 

Zachary Wojnarowski SS / RHP / Grafton, VA / 2019 Wojnarowksi is 5-11 and has an athletic frame that still has some projection left to it. Drop and drive delivery and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a longer, loose arm action that is quick, works with some effort. Shoulders uphill and slightly closed, lands on line with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 87-89 with some downward angle and late boring action to armside. Change-up was 71-75 and thrown with some armspeed, pitch had some cut to it.

 

 

Christian Gordon LHP / OF / Liberty Christian Academy, VA / 2019 Gordon is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, longer arm action that is free and a quick arm, throws with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball 84-86 with good downward angle and some late sink. Curveball was 70-72 12/6 or 1/7 break depending on side of plate he threw too, late hard break to it and some armspeed. Change-up was 77-79 with some armspeed and hard late run to it.

Sam Alheit LHP Indian River 2019
Alheit is 6-0 and has an athletic frame with projection left to it. He throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a shorter free arm action. Shoulders uphill and slightly closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 74-77 with some late run. Change-up had some arm action and a bit of cut running 65-71. Slider had some armspeed and sharp 2/8 action at 69-70.

Tyler Brocato RHP W.T. Woodson 2020
Brocato is 5-9 with a lanky frame with some projection left to it. He throws with a short arm action from a low three-quarters arm slot, arm action is free with normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands slightly closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 73-76 with some late sink. Change-up was 68-69 with fading action and some armspeed to it. Breaking ball was 66-68 with 10/4 action and some armspeed.

Bailey Burke RHP Kettle Run 2018
Burke is 5-11 with a strong athletic frame, he has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with a shorter free arm action. Normal effort, shoulders are uphill and online, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 74-76, touched 77, with sink to it. Change-up was 65-69 with sink and some armspeed. Curveball was 60-62 with gradual 12/6 break to it. Slider was 60-62 with later gradual 11/5 break to it.

Donovan Burke LHP Loudoun County 2019
Burke is 5-11 with a lankier athletic frame that still has projection to it. Throws with a drop and drive delivery from a three-quarters arm slot, longer free arm action that is quick, throws with some effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 81-84 with boring action to his armside and some downward plane to it. Change-up was 74-75 with sinking action to it. Curveball has hard sharp 1/7 break to it and good armspeed at 69-71.

Ben Capehart RHP Maury 2019
Capehart is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has plenty of projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a long arm action that is quick, some effort to the delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands slightly closed with a bit of a fall off finish. Fastball was 79-81, touching 82, with good downward plane and some late armside run. Curveball was 70-72 with late 12/6 break and good armspeed, pitch has a chance to be swing and miss as it continues to sharpen. Change-up was 75-77 with good armspeed and boring action to armside.

Jack Carey LHP Miller School 2019
Carey is 6-5 with a tall, strong athletic frame. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a long break straight back and a free arm action. Normal to some effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 80-82 with some downward plane and late run to it. Slider was 70-71 with good armspeed and hard 1/7 to downer action to it.

Joseph DeBard RHP Highland School 2019
DeBardi is 5-11 with an athletic frame and strong lower half, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a longer arm action that is free and quick, throws with some effort. Shoulders level and on line, lands square with a fall off finish. Fastball was 75-77, touching 80 late run and sink to it. Curveball was 63-65 with late gradual 11/5 break, threw it with good armspeed. Knuckleball was 66-70 with good armspeed late life.

Jesus Del Valle RHP T.C. Williams 2021
Del Valle is 5-11 with a lanky frame, he throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a longer free arm action and easier effort. Shoulders level and closed, lands a bit open with a fall off finish. Fastball was 71-74 touching 76 with some armside run to it. Curveball had gradual 12/6 break and some armspeed to it, running 62-63. Change-up was straight at 63-65.

Adam Dressler LHP Highland 2020
Dressler is 5-9 with an athletic frame, he throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action that is free. Shoulders on line and level, lands on line with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 75-76 with heavy armside run. Curveball had some late 2/8 break at 65-66 and was thrown with good armspeed.

Nick Famiglietti RHP Briar Woods 2020
Famiglietti is 5-11 with an athletic frame that still has a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot, short arm action is free and loose, normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish. Fastball was 78-80 with some late boring action to armside. Curveball had gradual 10/4 break and good armspeed, running 68-70, shape is good and pitch has potential as it tightens. Change-up was 70-73 with some sinking action and was thrown with some armspeed.

Aidan Foley LHP Western Branch 2020
Foley is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame with a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick, throws with some effort to his delivery. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with a slight fall off at finish. Fastball was 77-79, touching 80 with downward plane and late run to it. Change-up was 74-75 with good armspeed and late run to it. Curveball was 67-69 with sharp 1/7 break to it and some armspeed.

Paul Glenchur RHP Bishop O’Connell 2020

Curveball 65-67 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break and real good depth. Change-up 70-71 with some armspeed and a bit of late cut to it.

Brian Harrs LHP Gonzaga 2019
Harrs is 6-3 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and some effort. Shoulders level and on line, lands on line with an athletic finish and some recoil. Fastball was 78-81 with some downward plane and a bit of late run. Curveball was 66-69 with good armspeed and some late 2/8 break to it. Change-up was 73-74 with good armspeed and a bit of late run. Feel for offspeed was a work in progress.

Brandon Hill RHP Deep Run 2019
Hill is 6-1 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws with a drop and drive delivery from a high three-quarters arm slot with a shorter arm action that is loose and quick, throws with some effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 81-84, touching 85, with downward plane and some sink. Curveball was 71-74 with good armspeed and hard late 12/6 break. Change-up was 75-76 with some armspeed and late run. Slider was 73-74 with late hard downer action.

Daniel Jones RHP Eastern View 2019
Jones is 6-0 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and some effort. Shoulders are level and slightly closed, lands closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 76-79, touching 80 with some downward angle to it, two-seamer had some sink to it. Change-up was 68-72 with some sink and good armspeed. Curveball had gradual 11/5 break and some armspeed, running 65-68. Pitch has shape and potential as it tightens.

Ryan Mabry RHP Atlee 2019
Mabry is 6-0 with a strong lower half to his frame. He has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a sidearm slot with a longer free arm action and normal effort. Hinges at waist, shoulders keep on line with target, lands open with athletic finish. Fastball was 71-73, touching 74 with heavy late sink and some run. Slider was 66-68 with good armspeed and sharp sweeping action and some depth. Knuckleball was 64-67 with good armspeed and late tumble.

Jaron McNeil RHP Dinwiddie 2021
McNeil is 6-2 and has a lanky frame with a lot of projection left, throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot with a short, free arm action that is quick. Normal effort to his delivery, shoulders uphill and closed, lands on line with an athletic finish. Fastball was 80-82 with downward plane and a bit of late run. Change-up is straight at 72-75 with good armspeed. Curveball was 66-70 with hard late 11/5 break and good armspeed, swing and miss pitch already.

Jay Nesson RHP George Mason 2019
Nesson is 5-11 with a lankier frame that still has projection to it, he throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a shorter loose arm action and easier effort. Shoulders are closed and level, lands slightly closed, athletic finish with a bit of a fall off and some recoil. Fastball was 78-80 with some late run to it. Slider was 69-71 with hard 10/4 break and good arm action. Showed a curveball with 12/6 to 11/5 action and same velocity range. Change-up was 77 with some fade and good armspeed.

Nicholas Ortega LHP Paul VI Catholic 2019
Ortega is 5-10 with a lanky frame with a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a longer free arm action and normal effort. Shoulders closed and slightly uphill, lands closed with a fall off finish. Fastball was 73-74, touching 76 with some plane and late sink to it. Curveball was 65-67 with sharp 2/8 break and good armspeed. Change-up was 69-73 with good armspeed and heavy late fade to it. Showed good command of all three pitches.

Reilly Owen RHP William Monroe 2019
Owen is 6-1 with an athletic frame, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot with longer, loose arm action that is quick and whippy at finish. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands slightly closed with a bit of a fall off finish. Fastball was 81-83 with boring action to the armside. Change-up was 72-76 with fading action and some armspeed. Curveball was 67-72 with gradual 10/4 break to it.

Brandon Parks LHP Bethel 2020
Parks is 5-11 with an athletic frame, throws from low three-quarters arm slot, infield velocity was 74. On the mound, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with normal effort, shorter free arm action. Shoulders on line and level, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 77-79 with downward plane to it. Change-up had good armspeed and was 71-74 with a bit of run to it. Curveball was 68-71 with good armspeed and hard 12/6 break.

Elijah Parks LHP Manchester 2019
Parks is 5-11 with an athletic frame that still has projection to it. Has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action that is quick and some effort. Shoulders are closed and uphill, lands square with a hard fall off finish. Fastball was 83-84 with some plane and some late run to it. Curveball was 64-66 with good armspeed and sharp 1/7 break with really good depth. Change-up was 74-75 with good armspeed and heavy sink. Slider was 67-70.

Connor Phillips RHP Radford 2020
Phillips is 6-3 with a lanky frame and a lot of projection left, he throws with a drop and drive delivery from a lower three-quarters arm slot with normal effort, shorter arm action stabbing back at hand break, quick arm. Shoulders are closed and level, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 81-83 with some late armside run to it. Change-up was 71-74 with good armspeed and some late run. Curveball had good shape and was 66-70 with hard 11/5 break, has potential to become swing and miss as it sharpens.

Kole Register RHP Western Branch 2018
Register is 6-2 with a lankier athletic frame that still has projection to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short loose arm action that is quick, throws with some effort. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 83-85 with some late run to it. Curveball was 67-69 with 11/5 action and good armspeed. Change-up was 75-76 with good armspeed and sink. Splitter was 70-72 with sharp hard 12/6 break and good armspeed. Splitter was a swing-and-miss offering.

Seth Richards LHP Oakton 2019
Richards is 6-0 and has an athletic frame with some projection left to it. Has a drop and drive delivery and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and normal effort. Avery Salyer RHP Homeschool 2021
Salyer is 6-3 with a lanky frame with a lot of projection left to it. He throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, longer free arm action with a quick arm, throws with normal effort. Shoulders downhill and on line, lands closed with a slight fall off finish. Fastball was 80-82 with good downward plane and some late run. Curveball was 70-72 with gradual 11/5 action and good shape, pitch has a chance to tighten up into a good one. Change-up was 77-79 with some armspeed and heavy late sink, resembled splitter action.

Jake Sampson RHP Hickory 2019
Sampson is 6-3 with a lankier frame that has plenty of projection. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are closed and uphill, lands closed with an athletic finish. Fastball was 77-78 with downward plane. Curveball was 68-69 with some armspeed and late gradual 11/5 break, has shape and should tighten. Change-up was 73-75 with good armspeed and late fade to it. Slider was 70.

Mark Smith RHP Tallwood 2019
Smith is 6-1 with an athletic frame, drop and drive delivery, throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a short free arm action and normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball was 80-84, touching 85 with downward plane and some late boring action to armside. Curveball was 64-66 with hard 10/4 break. Change-up was 72-74 with some armspeed and sinking action.

Benjamin Stovall LHP Massaponax 2019
Stovall is 5-11 with an athletic frame. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a longer free arm action and some effort to his delivery. Shoulders uphill and on line, lands square with some fall off and recoil. Fastball was 75-78 with downward plane and a bit of late run to it. Curveball was 62-64 with big gradual 1/7 break and some shape to it, has a chance to be a good pitch as it tightens. Change-up was 69-71 with some armspeed and late sink to it.

Joel Tarrh RHP Riverbend 2020
Tarrh is 6-3 with an athletic frame. He throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a longer loose arm action that is quick, high effort to his delivery. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands slightly open with a hard fall off finish. Fastball was 82-84 with good downward plane and some late hard run to it. Curveball was 69-72 with good armspeed and late sharp power 12/6 break to it. Change-up was 76-77 with good armspeed.

Cooper Thomas RHP Eastern View 2020
Thomas is 6-3 with a lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a long loose arm action that has some quickness to it and normal effort. Shoulders are level and on line, lands slightly open with a fall off finish. Fastball was 72-74, touching 76, with good downward plane and some late hard run to it. Curveball was 59-61 with gradual 10/4 break and good shape, has potential to tighten into a very good pitch. Slider was 57-61 with similar 10/4 action but was sharper.

Dylan Weber LHP Dominion 2019
Weber is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a long loose arm action and easier effort. Shoulders are uphill and closed, lands square with some fall off in his finish. Fastball was 82-84, touching 85, with some downward plane and a bit of run to armside. Curveball was 69-70 with good armspeed and sharp 2/8 break. Change-up was 75-76 with good armspeed and some fade to it.

Nicholas Willard RHP York 2020
Willard is 6-1 with a lanky frame, he throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a longer arm action and normal effort. Shoulders are uphill and on line, lands square with an athletic finish. Fastball has some downward angle and a bit of late run, pitch was 76-78. Curveball was 70-72 and had good armspeed and late hard 11/5 break.
