Riverheads Dominate As They Take Home the 1A Crown

The Riverheads Gladiators jumped out to a 10-1 lead after the second inning and never looked back as they defeated the Honaker Tigers 13-1 to claim the VHSL 1A State Title.

The Gladiators struck early in the game when Braeson Fulton (JMU) doubled to center that scored Grant Painter (JMU) and gave Riverheads a quick 1-0 lead. Forrest Shuey would lead the way the next hitter, scoring Fulton on a sac fly after he had stolen third during the at bat. After the first, Riverheads was up 2-0.

Honaker would strike back in the top of the second inning and get a run of their own to cut into the Riverheads lead, but then the Gladiators exploded for eight runs in the inning and they would never look back in the game. Riverheads would take advantage of five walks in the inning and combine three hits, one of which was a bases clearing triple from the bat of Jakob King. Riverheads would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as Painter would also hit a triple with the bases loaded to make the score 13-1 which became the final.

Elijah Dunlap pitched masterful in the game, giving up one unearned run while scattering five hits. He added four strikeouts and one walk as Dunlap pitched all seven innings in 81 pitches.

Painter led the Gladiators going 3-for-4 at the plate with five RBI. Dunlap also paced the offense with two hits. King and Shuey added two RBI apiece.
