On Thursday I saw my first game of the season as Gonzaga traveled to take on Highland. A well pitched-low scoring game took place, with Highland taking an early 1-0 lead before Gonzaga answered with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Hawks scored two in the bottom of the fifth with the winning run scoring on a Julian LaBella (Eastern Mennonite) double. From there, Highland hung on to win, 3-2.

Connor McAuley (Randolph-Macon) threw three 1-hit shutout innings to finish the game and pick up the win, Nate Dulevitz (Mary Washington) was 2-3 with an RBI and a 2B in the win. For Gonzaga, Joseph Zorc was 2-3 and Nick Morabito (Virginia Tech) was 1-2 with a BB. Henry Hultquist (Davidson) went four innings allowing just 1 run as the starter.

Gonzaga College:

Henry Hultquist RHP / OF / Gonzaga, VA / 2022

Steven Jungers C / OF / Gonzaga College , VA / 2022

Marcus LeClair 1B / LHP / Gonzaga, VA / 2023

LeClair is a Virginia commit, he has a tall lanky frame with a lot of projection left to it. Hits from the right side, short quick swing, hands stay inside and lets his length create leverage in the swing. On the swing in the video, stays very short and inside on a two-strike pitch, lining a single up the middle. Very comfortable at the plate, saw a mix of pitches in the game and did a good job of staying on balance and working deep into the count during each at-bat.

Nicholas Morabito SS / 2B / Gonzaga, VA / 2022

Morabito is a Virginia Tech commit. Played centerfield in this game, his speed was on display and he showed a great first step on a ball, running down what felt like a sure double to deep right-center at one point pretty easily. At the plate, short swing, level to contact with extension up and through the ball, shows power to pull side with gap power to all fields. Athleticism shows in his swing.

Highland School:

Brennen Card LHP / OF / Highland, VA / 2024

Card is a William & Mary commit. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, short quick arm action, normal effort, some fall off in his finish. Simple delivery that he repeats well. Fastball was 79-82, touching 84 with a bit of late life. Slider was 70-73 with hard late 2/8 break and very good armspeed. Change-up was outstanding and drew swing-and misses, had late hard fade and very good armspeed, running 72-75. Showed comfort throwing all three pitches in any count and ability to throw all for strikes. Moves fastball up and down and does a good job of hiding the ball and creating natural deception to make his velocity play up significantly. Clearly knows how to pitch, athleticism and projection in frame suggest there is still more in the tank for Card.

Nate Dulevitz 2B / C / Highland School, VA / 2022

Ryan Gimbel SS / RHP / Highland School, VA / 2023

Gimbel has an athletic frame that he has added strength too. There is still some projection left to it. Hits from the right side, level line drive swing, hands stay inside and is very short to the ball. Line drive hitter that uses the whole field with some extra base power and still some potential to continue to add more as he adds strength.
