TOp Prospect Showcase-North: Pitcher analysis

Caleb Barnes, OF/LHP, Briar Woods, 2016
Barnes has an athletic frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot and has a smooth, drop and drive delivery. His arm action is long and free and he generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are level and closed as he strides out to a square landing. He finishes in an athletic position with a bit of a recoil to his arm. Barnes threw his fastball for strikes, sitting 76-77 with slight run. He also threw a 1/7 curveball with late break that was thrown with decent arm speed and a slightly higher arm slot. He kept his breaking ball down, sitting 64-66 with it. His changeup was thrown with decent armspeed and had sinking action. He threw it for strikes at the top of the zone, sitting 69-71.

Ryan Billy, RHP, C.D. Hylton, 2016
Billy has an athletic frame and throws from a low three-quarters slot with a smooth drop and drive delivery. His arm action is short and a bit stiff on the back side. He has a quick armstroke and generates velocity with pretty normal effort. His shoulders are uphill and closed and he lands a bit closed before falling off bit as he finishes. Billy’s fastball sat 80-82, touching 83, with heavy sink. He pounded the zone with the pitch. He went to a slightly higher arm slot to throw a sharp, late-breaking 11/5 curveball that ran 73-77. Billy’s changeup was down and was thrown with decent armspeed and fading action, running 65-67.

Joe DiConsiglio, RHP/MIF, Yorktown, 2016
DiConsiglio has an athletic frame and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot and has a choppy drop and drive delivery with a UVA bend at the start. He has a long arm action that wraps a bit before a quick armstroke. His shoulders are closed and level as he strides out, swinging his front leg into a square landing with his hips open before falling off a bit as he finishes. DiConsiglio threw his fastball in the 82-83 range, touching 84, with slight cutting action to it. He threw a sharp, 11/5 breaking slider with decent armspeed that was down and ran 71-76. His changeup had sinking action and ran 71-74.

Greg Duncan, RHP, Westfield, 2016
Duncan has a big frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot and has a drop and drive delivery. He has a shorter arm action that is a bit stiff and a quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are level and online as he strides out, swinging his front leg into a slightly open landing with a bit of a fall off as he finishes. His fastball was thrown for strikes and had late sinking action to it and sat 80-84, touching 85. He threw a sharp, 11/5 breaking curveball with good armspeed that ran 66-69. He also threw a late, 10/4 breaking slider that ran 67-71. His changeup was thrown with good armspeed and had armside run to it, sitting 72-76.

Austin Gerber, RHP/OF, Patriot, 2016
Gerber has an athletic frame and throws from a low three-quarters arm slot with a rushed drop and drive delivery. He is long on his backside arm action before shortening up as he comes through to a quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill and slightly closed as he strides out to an open landing before falling off as he finishes. Gerber’s fastball ran 81-83, and his two-seamer ran 77-79 with good, late run and sink to it. His curveball has late 10/4 break and ran 65-67. Gerber threw an outstanding fading changeup with full armspeed that he commanded well, sitting 72-73.

Teddy Herbert, 1B/RHP, Washington-Lee, 2016
Herbert is a bit lanky and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot and has a tall and fall delivery. His arm action is long and wraps behind him before a very quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill and on line as he strides out to a square landing before falling off a bit as he finishes. Herbert’s fastball had slight run when it was thrown to his armside, sitting 80-82. He threw a gradual breaking 11/5 curveball that ran 61-67. His changeup was thrown from a lower slot with good armspeed and had armside run to it, sitting 72-74.

Nozomu Honda, RHP, James Madison, 2016
Honda has an athletic frame that is a bit lanky and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a violent tall and fall delivery. His arm action is short on the back side and he has a quick arm stroke, generating velocity with some effort. His shoulders are level and online as he strides out to a square landing with an open foot. He falls off hard as he finishes and his arm recoils a bit. Honda’s fastball has some late run, and was 79-81. He threw a late-breaking, 11/5 curveball with good armspeed that ran 64-66. Honda also threw a true 10/4 slider that was late and tight when thrown to his glove side, running 71-72. He also threw a split change that was down and ran 65-67.

Brett Kreyer, LHP, Stone Bridge, 2016
Kreyer has an athletic frame with a strong lower half. He has a quick tall and fall delivery and throws from a high three-quarters arm slot. He is short on the backside before a quick armstroke that generates velocity with some effort. His shoulders are uphill and online as he strides out to a square landing before coming to an athletic finish with a slight recoil. Kreyer’s fastball has slight cutting action with good downward plane and ran 80-82. His slider had late, tight 10/4 break and was thrown with good armspeed at 73-74. He threw an overhand curveball with 12/6 break that is sharp when down in the zone that ran 61-62. His changeup was thrown with full armspeed and had armside run, sitting 71-74. Kreyer’s command of all four pitches was outstanding to both sides of the plate.

Brian Lawson, RHP, South Lakes, 2016
Lawson has a lanky frame and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a smooth tall and fall delivery. He breaks his hands late and has a short arm action. His shoulders are level and on line as he strides out to a square landing with his front foot open before coming to an athletic finish. Lawson’s fastball ran 75-77, touching 78, and had hard run to it when it was down in the zone. His slider was sharp with 10/4 action and decent armspeed, running 65-68. He also threw a sinking changeup for strikes with decent armspeed in the 69-72 range.

Joe Sfreddo, LHP, St. John Paul the Great Catholic, 2016
Sfreddo is tall and very lanky and throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a choppy tall and fall delivery. He has a very short backside arm action and a fluid armstroke. He pauses at his balance point before striding out with his shoulders level and on line as he comes to a square landing with a slight recoil as he finishes. Sfreddo’s fastball was thrown for strikes with some late movement, running 67-69. His curveball had gradual 2/8 break and ran 51-54. His changeup was thrown with good armspeed and had armside run to it, sitting 62-64.
