Last week, Major League Baseball held its Amateur Draft. Over 1200 players were selected in 40 rounds spanning the 3 days, and it was a banner year for Virginia in the draft in terms of volume of players selected. Players that were eligible to be drafted this year were high school seniors (Class of 2019), junior college players, and players from four-year colleges who are either 21 or have been on campus for three season (HS Classes of 2017, 2016, and 2015). Check out our profiles of the drafted prep players.

Scouting Report

Baylor was drafted in the 3rd round by the Phillies

VA/DC Scout Blog

Baylor stands around 5-foot-11 with a strong athletic makeup. Hits from the right side from a square stance and lands slightly closed after a small pickup to stride. Hands load back in rhythm and shows balance. Has ability to pull hands in, path has some uphill tilt, and has a high one handed finish. Present pull-side power and is quick out of the box and on the bases. Defensively has nice actions at shortstop. Solid first step and understands angles on approach. Soft hands with a clean exchange and a short arm action with solid arm strength. Is a legitimate high level prospect with offensive and defensive ability. Has the ability to hit for power, as well as the speed to swipe any base at any time.

Physical and athletic frame. Hits from an athletic set up at the plate. Level path with a barrel that stays in the zone. Pull approach right now and uses his strength at plate. Like to see free up hands more, possibly for better extension and drive. Quick bat speed. Very athletic infield prospect. soft hands, clean and quick, throws are firm across the diamond and can be done from multiple angles. good footwork and fundamentals defensively. Will probably move to short once Ryan graduates and will fill the role without skipping a beat. Chance to be pretty special

Scouting Report

Lockhart was drafted in the 11th round by the Rangers
5/02/19

VA/DC Scout Blog

Lockhart has a tall lanky frame that has a ton of projection left to it. He throws from a three-quarters arm slot with a short, loose, very quick arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Shoulders are closed and slightly uphill, lands closed, crossfire delivery, some fall off to his finish. Fastball was primarily 86-90 on the day, touching 92 once. Pitch had some downward plane and a touch of late run to it when down in the zone, flattens when up. Held his velocity in the stretch, was still working 86-89 in the fourth and touched a 90 in the fifth with a few fastballs dropping down to 83. Velocity was back up again in the sixth into the 86-88 range, touching 90. Showed ability to throw pitch to both sides of the plate, still more of a strike thrower than a pitcher who truly commands his fastball in the zone at this point. Curveball had 11/5 break and was 65-70, big downer break to it, more power downer at the 69-70 range, slowed his arm at times and it got slurvy. Didn't show a change-up, threw well over 80% fastball in the game, only really threw curveballs to try to cut heads off batters. Had 4 strikeouts in 6 innings and gave up 2 home runs. A ton of projection and upside still ahead for Lockhart, still a very raw prospect.

Lockhart has a tall lanky frame with a lot of projection left. Threw one inning of relief in what was his second day of work in a row. Fastball sat 84-87, touched 90 one time. Easy effort. Good curveball was 68-71. 11/5 shape with sharpness to it.

Lockhart is a 6-foot-5 RHP out of Woodgrove HS.  Projectable frame with some athleticism that shows nice repeatability on the mound. Has been 85-88 this summer with more velocity in the future and shows feel for secondary.

Scouting Report

Gordon was drafted in the 38th round by the Pirates
2/17/18

Preseason All-State

Gordon is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has some projection left to it. Throws from a higher three-quarters arm slot, longer arm action that is free and a quick arm, throws with normal effort. Shoulders uphill and closed, lands square with a slight fall off finish. Fastball 84-86 with good downward angle and some late sink. Curveball was 70-72 12/6 or 1/7 break depending on side of plate he threw too, late hard break to it and some armspeed. Change-up was 77-79 with some armspeed and hard late run to it.
