VA/DC Draft Check-in: Draft Class of 2019 Part 2

The 2019 draft class was a banner one for Virginia/DC. While only three prep players were selected, the high school Class of 2016 delivered on its promise and driving the number of drafted players up. Yesterday we checked in on how the members of the Class of 2016 did in their first Pro seasons, today we look at the rest of the draft class, including the two Virginia prep players who signed.

 

We open with RHP Charles Hall, who graduated Forest Park in 2012, before PBR VA/DC had launched. Hall took a long path to eventually be drafted in the 33rd Round out of Tusculum this spring after striking out 148 batters in 89 innings. The Athletics selected him in June and he spend most of the summer in Rookie ball in Arizona, making a lone appearance for Double-A Midland. In Arizona, he threw 33 innings with a 3.55 ERA while striking out 40 batters.

 

 

Jamari Baylor SS / Benedictine , VA / 2019

Baylor was committed to Louisburg CC and signed after being taken in the 3rd round by the Phillies. He sent to the Rookie level Gulf Coast League, where he appeared in 4 games and went 3-11 with 2 doubles and a walk.

Nic Enright RHP / Steward , VA / 2015

Enright turned in a strong 2019 in a swing role at Virginia Tech and was selected in the 20th round by the Indians. He was sent to Arizona for Rookie League and made 15 appearances in relief, throwing 18 innings. He compiled a 0.50 ERA while striking out 26 batters.

Bradley Hanner RHP / Orange Co., VA / 2017

Hanner was selected in the 21st round by the  Twins out of Patrick Henry CC. He was sent to Florida to play in the Rookie Level Gulf Coast League. He made 11 appearances as a reliever, throwing 26.2 innings, striking out 30 hitters and allowing just 16 hits.

AJ Lee SS / St. John's, VA / 2015

Lee had a strong senior season at Maryland and was taken in the 34th round Astros. He spent the bulk of the season in Short Season A Tri-City while also making a stop in the Class A Midwest League at Quad Cities. Across the two stops, he hit .211 in 175 at-bats with a .327 OBP. He hit five home runs and stole 12 bases.

Nick Lockhart RHP / Woodgrove , VA / 2019

After a dominant high school season, Lockhart had been slated to attend Virginia Tech, but opted to sign with the Rangers, who had taken him in the 11th round. He went to Arizona for Rookie League and saw limited action, throwing 6 innings in 6 appearances, compiling a 4.50 ERA and striking out 9 batters.

Tanner Morris SS / Miller School, VA / 2017

Morris had a strong season at Virginia, hitting .345. As a draft-eligible sophomore, he was taken in the 5th round by the Blue Jays. After signing, he was sent to Vancouver of the Short Season A Northwest League. Over 294 plate appearances, he hit .246 with a very good .384 OBP. Morris also had 16 doubles to go with two home runs.

Nick Roth RHP / Benedictine, VA / 2015

After a career of starring at Randolph-Macon, Roth was selected in the 26th round by the Orioles. He spent the majority of his summer at in the Gulf Coast League, where he threw 19.2 innings over 12 appearances. He picked up 3 saves in the GCL while posting a 0.92 ERA and striking out 23 batters while allowing just 1 walk. He also made 1 appearance for Low Class A Delmarva.
