VA/DC Scout Blog: Battlefield at Freedom (South Riding)

A hot Friday night was the scene for the fourth meeting between Battlefield and Freedom (South Riding) as the Bobcats traveled to South Riding to take on the Eagles in the Cedar Run District Tournament Championship Game. Freedom won their third meeting on Tuesday night, which determined the District Champion and which team would be the top seed in the Region 6B draw. This game would determine who was the Tournament Champion.
Freedom sent junior righty Luke Proehl (Virginia Tech) to the mound for the start and Battlefield went with senior righty Kyle Zambrana. Freedom was able to work around a pair of baserunners in the first and then opened up a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning on a Cal Henderson (Louisburg CC) RBI triple, followed by a passed ball.
The Bobcats were able to get a run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Ryan Morrison (CNU) came in with the bases loaded and got out of the inning with no more damage. The Eagle bats responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to open up a 5-1 lead. Morrison would shut down the Battlefield offense and the Eagles would cruise from their to an 8-1 win. Both teams advance to the Region 6B Tournament, which begins on Wednesday. Both will also host their quarterfinal matchups, with Freedom hosting Potomac and Battlefield hosting Colonial Forge.
For Freedom, Henderson finished 2-3 with a BB, 3B, and 2 RBI. Mason Butash (Penn State) was 1-3 with a 2B and 2 RBI. Morrison went 4.1 innings scoreless, allowing just 4 hits. For Battlefield, Grayson Snead and Cooper Harris were both 2-3.
