Tuesday night saw a perfect night for baseball as the 2022 regular season is approaching its end in Northern Virginia. In the Cedar Run District, Battlefield and Freedom (South Riding) are tied atop the District, and both are trying to take care of business and force a one-game playoff for the District Championship next week. On Tuesday, Battlefield went on the road to take on Osbourn, with the Bobcats starting freshman lefty Sam Michel and the Eagles going with senior righty Matt Hollar (Emory & Henry).

Both pitchers traded goose eggs in the first before Battlefield put up four runs in the second and five in the third to open a 9-1 lead. An eight-run fifth inning that was punctuated by a Grayson Snead grand slam pushed the score to 17-1, which was the final.

Snead was 3-5 and missed the Cycle by a triple while driving in 6 runs. Kyle Zambrana was 3-3 with 2 RBI and Kehler Hamilton, Joey Swetosky, and Carson Cho all had multiple hits for the Bobcats. RJ Donahue had a 2B and an RBI for Osbourn.

Sam Michel LHP / Battlefield, VA / 2025

Michel is 6-0 with an athletic frame that has strength present. Likely to continue adding height as he ages and keep that strong athletic frame. Simple smooth delivery, some drop and drive in it, shoulders stay level and closed, hides the ball some. Swings into an open landing with some fall off in his finish. Low three-quarters arm slot, long loose arm action with some quickness, easy effort to his delivery. Fastball was 79-83, mostly 82-83. He touched 84 once and 85 twice. Pitch has some angle to it and a bit of late sink to it. Showed the ability to vary speeds on pitch based on count. Both 85s were 2-strike late count pitches where he was trying to finish a hitter, most of his 79s and 80s were first pitches or behind in count pitches where he was trying to get back into the count or maybe even get slightly off balance contact without throwing a change-up. Controlled fastball and was around the zone with it, next step is to start locating within the zone, but he has plenty of time to add that as he develops. Curveball was good on the night, running 67-70, showed good armspeed with sharp 1/7 break and some shape to it. Pitch was at its best when thrown to righthanders, got a lot of swing and misses on it. Showed one change-up that was 75 with good armspeed and a bit of late sink. A lot to like in a freshman arm that still has a ton of upside, going to be one to keep a close eye on over the next few years at the pitching factory that is Battlefield HS.
