On Wednesday, March 1st, the Freedom-South Riding Eagles hosted Gonzaga. While there was plenty of talent on display, we wanted to highlight a handful of players from the Freedom squad.

Freedom-South Riding

Mason Butash RHP / OF / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2023

Butash got the start for the Eagles in the Gonzaga scrimmage. Butash was very efficient and effective during his two innings pitched. Exclusive fastball/slider mix. The arm slot is a higher three-quarter slot and lands slightly closed. The 90-91 mph fastball worked to both sides of the plate and I thought he did a nice job getting it to the glove side fairly consistently. There was some fade to it when working to the arm side. The slider was the go-to pitch for the Penn State commit. He could throw it for strikes fairly consistently and finished counts with the 78-82 offering. Downer shape to the pitch and had some swing and miss qualities, striking out three with the slider alone. The frame has filled out well and seems much more under control on the mound and more efficient around the plate.

Sam Kemmerer 3B / RHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2024

Kemmerer was the most productive bat on the night for either side. Left handed hitter that did a nice job staying inside the ball. Went backside double for his second hit of the night and showed solid bat to ball with a level path stroke.

Ryan Marohn LHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2023

Seems as though every time we see Marohn he simply continues to add pitchability. While he was 90-91 and touching 92 during his three innings pitched, it was his tempo, efficiency, and ability to throw three effective pitches this early in the year. Creates some angle on the fastball that he was able to get in on right-handers with and showed some run when he worked to the arm side. The slider is tight and short shaped at 81-82 mph and has solid feel for it in the zone. The changeup was equally as impressive as the fastball/slider. Good arm speed and feel for the zone at 83-85 mph. The NC State recruit had two strikeouts with the changeup. He showed some athleticism getting off of the mound, can repeat the delivery, and induced weak contact when hitters put it in play. Legitimate three pitch mix with ability to get quick outs and has secondary to keep hitters off balance.

Luke Proehl RHP / Freedom , VA / 2023

It has been a year since I have seen the Virginia Tech recruit and I thought his outing versus Gonzaga was a great start to his season. Better command, a slight tick up in velo, and feel for the slider. The lower slot induces some really nice sink to the fastball that showed the ability to tie some hitters up. The fastball was 86-89 with late sink and the slider was 78-80 with depth. He worked with pace and was appeared confident on the mound. Really solid two innings of work early in the year from Proehl.

Ryan Pugh RHP / OF / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2024

It has been a while since we have seen Pugh, but he had some flashes on Wednesday night. The command was a bit scattered at times, as he worked around the fastball and tended to pull everything, but he worked himself out of some jams and had a better second inning of work. Pugh sat 83-85 and touched 86 with the fastball. He did show one 77 mph breaking ball with well above average spin rate at 2862 RPM, but did not show many more as it appeared he did not have a solid feel for it. Interesting uncommitted 2024 that had fairly easy velo in the mid 80's.
