Tuesday night saw #3 Freedom go on the road in Cedar Run District play to take on #21 Patriot. Freedom started senior lefty Ryan Morrison (CNU) and Patriot went with junior righty Jakob Foster (Mount St. Mary's)

Patriot jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 2 innings with a big rally in the second inning. The big blow in the rally was a 3-RBI double off the bat of Kyle VanDenburg. Freedom began chipping away at the Pioneer lead, scoring 2 runs in the third inning and then single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Tyler Smith (Ferrum) was able to work out of trouble in the third inning and keep the game close for the Eagles before Ryan Marohn (NC State) took over on the mound.

Foster was strong in his outing, going 6 innings and striking out 10, leaving the game with a 6-4 lead after six innings. In the top of the seventh, Freedom loaded the bases with no outs and Griffin Burkholder (West Virginia) delivered a 3-RBI double of his own to give the Eagles the lead. Marohn struck out the side in order in the seventh, sealing the 7-6 comeback win for Freedom.

Marohn struck out 9 in 4 innings of one-hit scoreless ball with no walks. Cal Henderson (Louisburg CC) went 3-4 with an RBI for Freedom. VanDenburg finished the game 2-4 with 3 RBI and Max Ehrhardt (Salisbury) also went 2-3 with a 2B for Patriot.

Griffin Burkholder OF / RHP / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2024

Burkholder is a West Virginia commit. He has a lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and room to add more. Played centerfield, shows quickness in the outfield and throws have some carry and accuracy. At the plate, shows the ability to handle the bat, showed drag bunt in most of his at-bats and kept it in the opposing team's mind. Hits from the right side, wider balanced athletic stance, keeps toe down for stride, short load back, hips fire with some violence and he maintains good balance through contact. Quick bat, slightly uphill path with some strength at contact, line drive hitter right now with extra base power to pull side and in gaps, chance to add more as he continues to add strength.

Cal Henderson C / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2022

Ryan Marohn LHP / 1B / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2023

Marohn is an NC State commit and has a lanky frame with a lot of projection left to it. Short free arm action, quick arm stroke, throws with normal effort. Throws from a low three-quarters arm slot, has some crossfire in his delivery and strides out with shoulders closed, hides the ball and creates some deception. Low slot and crossfire creates an angle that is very tough on lefties. Showed three pitches in the game, fastball was 84-87, touching 88 once. in his third and fourth innings he mostly just working right at 85. Pitch had angle and some late sink and armside run to it. Threw a tight slider with some late 2/8 break that was 78-79. Primary offspeed pitch was a curveball that had good armspeed and sharp 2/8 break to it, pitch has some shape to it and flashed swing and miss potential. Showed the ability to throw curve for a strike or bury it, also the ability to back foot it to a righthanded hitter. Moved his fastball around the zone, showed good control of his pitches and ability to throw strikes and work ahead in the count. Struck out 9 in 4 innings without walking any batters. Showed pitchability and has a chance to continue adding velocity as he gains more strength and continues to develop.

Matthew Boyd RHP / OF / Patriot, VA / 2022

Jordan Capuano RHP / Patriot , VA / 2023

Capuano has a strong athletic frame. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short quick arm action, throws with higher effort. Simple drop and drive delivery, some recoil to his finish. Had a short outing, just facing a few hitters of relief at the end of the game. Fastball was 84-86, high arm slot and size generate some downward and angle and he gets a bit of late hop of armside run on the pitch.

Jakob Foster RHP / 3B / Patriot, VA / 2023

Foster is a Mount St. Mary's commit. He has a tall long lankier athletic frame that has some strength present and a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a longer loose quick arm action, throws with some effort. Drop and drive delivery, strides out mostly on line and swings into an open landing, a bit of fall off and recoil in his finish. Fastball was 83-85, touching 86 a few times in the early innings. Pitch gets downward angle and some boring action to his armside. Also threw a slider that was 74-75 with late tight 10/4 break to it. Primary offspeed pitch was a curveball with 11/5 to 12/6 break, good armspeed late sharp break to the pitch. Struck out 10 in the game, getting strikeouts on multiple pitches. Showed control and was around the zone with all three pitches. Has a chance to fill out his frame and continue to add velocity and has the arsenal to project to being a starter at the next level and being able to carry that workload and work deep in games.
