Wednesday night saw public school opening week continue with a Northwest matchup of teams of traditional powers in Loudoun Valley and Millbrook. Both teams started seniors on the mound with Valley going with righty Matt Mazzara and the Pioneers tabbing righty Jerrod Jenkins (Dallas Baptist) for the start. The game was tight early before until Millbrook broke it open with a 4-run fifth en route to an 8-2 win.

For Millbrook, Carl Keenan was 2-3 with a 2B and a BB and Chase Ford was 2-3 with an RBI. Will Croyle had a big 2 RBI double and Ethan Burgreen (Shepherd) had a pair of RBI SAC Flies and closed the game out with 1.2 scoreless innings. The Vikings only managed two hits, but Jake Slade (Virginia Tech) reached base three times with a BB and 2 HBP.

Take a look at video and notes on a few players from Wednesday night's game.

Loudoun Valley:

Jake Slade SS / RHP / Loudoun Valley, VA / 2023

Slade is a Virginia Tech commit and is 6-3 with a lankier athletic frame that has a lot of projection and room to add strength. Didn't get a chance to do much at the plate, was hit by pitches twice and walked in his first three plate appearances. In his final at-bat, was just under the ball for a fly out to center. Quick swing and some whip in his bat, long arms generate leverage after contact, has power potential at the plate that he will have a chance to access as he continues to get stronger. Defensively, soft hands, fields with a wider base, smooth actions. Throws from a low three-quarters to sidearm slot, showed an average arm in warm-ups, but its a loose easy arm action, easily above average with potential to increase. A lot of quick-twitch as an athlete.

Millbrook:

Ethan Burgreen SS / RHP / Millbrook , VA / 2022

Chase Ford OF / OF / Millbrook , VA / 2024

Micah George OF / RHP / Millbrook, VA / 2024

Jerrod Jenkins RHP / C / Millbrook , VA / 2022

Jenkins is a Dallas Baptist commit and is 6-4 with a prototypical pitcher's build. Athletic frame with some strength present and projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short quick loose arm action, some effort to his delivery. Very closed off landing, a lot of crossfire in his delivery that creates deception and hides the ball. Fastball was 85-88 in the first three innings and was 84-86 after that. Arm slot and height generate downward angle on the pitch and it also got some occasional late cut. Curveball was 74-76 with good armspeed and hard power 11/5 break to it and some shape already. High-spin pitch that shows swing-and-miss. Showed a straight change with good armspeed that was 76. Had some struggles with command early and control at times. Got squeezed in the first few innings, running his pitch count up quickly, and then he lost a few pitches once he started to tire. Doesn't give up much velocity in the stretch, also showed his overall athleticism, hitting during the game and hammering a couple of balls.
