We take a look at some video and notes on four players from Ocean Lakes at #14 Cox.

Ocean Lakes

Blake Dickerson LHP / Ocean Lakes, VA / 2023

6-foot-6, long, thin frame with plenty of room to fill and projection left. On the day Dickerson worked 88-90 mph with the fastball. The fastball command was scattered early and had some arm side misses. He worked himself out of some jams in his first couple innings and got a few swings and misses on the fastball. The breaking ball had more slider and even cutter feel to it at times. The breaking pitch was in the 80-84 mph range, with mostly 80-82's, and the feel got better as he went into the outing.

Cox

Jake Colucci RHP / 1B / Frank W. Cox, VA / 2024

The uncommitted junior had a solid start for the Falcons. Colucci worked into the sixth inning, tallying five strikeouts, and allowing only three hits. It was a three pitch mix with a fastball that was 84-86 early, touching a few 87's. The slider was short action shape at 79-81 mph and he showed a solid feel for it. Fading changeup at 79-81 mph with average feel and it worked mostly to the armside. The spin is effective and efficient, but it was not a true swing and miss type of slider. Solid frame with proportional strength. Overall Colucci is a mid 80's strike thrower and competes in the zone with two-plus pitches.

Ryan DeLashmutt RHP / OF / Frank W. Cox, VA / 2024

DeLashmutt came on in relief of Colucci in the sixth. He was in a tough spot and did a nice job working out of it and minimizing some of the potential damage. Longer, lanky frame with room to add some good weight. The arm swing is long and works from a three-quarter to low three-quarter arm slot. The fastball stayed between 83-86 mph during his two-plus innings of work and tended to play a little quicker. Showed a really nice feel for the fastball to the glove side. The spin backed up and lacked shape and feel early, but tightened up and was able to use it effectively on the back end of the seventh and in the eight inning. More slurvy 11/5 with some depth to it. Interesting arm with the frame to make some nice gains in the long run.

Austin Irby 3B / OF / Cox , VA / 2024

Probably the player I came away impressed by the most on the day. The ECU commit has really, really filled out. Proportional strength that is easy to see, especially since I last saw him. Irby had a few nice plays at third base, capable defender, comes forward well and can throw on the run. Probably more third base, second base, corner outfield profile at the next level. One of my biggest questions in the past was will he hit enough to play the defensive positions that he projects at and the answer is yes. The added physicality has really helped that fit piece. Simple lift to stride, gets down on time, solid pitch recognition and discipline, and longer path out front with some adjustability. Strong at contact working against a firm front side and head stays behind contact. Really like the couple of swings I saw him put on the ball and am excited to get to see him again in a few weeks.
