See notes and video on nine players from Monday night's scrimmage between Atlee and Benedictine.

St. John's

Ren Devereux RHP / 1B / St John's College, VA / 2025

First thing you notice is how the frame has cleaned up and he has started to add some strength to the frame. Long, lanky frame at 6-foot-2. He had some command issues early on and worked himself into some high stress situations, but settled in better as he got into his second inning of work. The fastball sat low 80's throughout his outing and put up plenty of 84's. The breaking ball, while loose and below average feel in his first inning, was effective from his second inning on. It was a 69-71 mph offering and he got some uncomfortable swings and takes during his outing.

Sean Harmon RHP / OF / St. John's College, VA / 2023

Lanky 5-foot-10 frame. Balance and repeatability in the delivery. Down and out moving toward the plate. Stays on line and works from a higher slot creating some downhill plane to the fastball. The fastball had some sneaky velo, sitting mid 80's and getting up to 87 regularly. Had above average feel for a 70-72 short shaped slider that he got some swing and miss with.

Nate Hawton-Henley OF / SS / St. John's College, VA / 2025

Hawton-Henley has some loud tools that are easy to see. Proportional, lean strength with some twitch in his actions. Got a fly ball in right field where he was able to show off his arm strength to third base on a tag. Well above average arm strength and creates pretty solid direction on throws. The swing got disconnected a bit and tended to get out front. Hands are set high and he is has a short, steeper downhill path to contact working the top half of the ball. Is an above average runner and gets out the box well. Plays hard.

Brayden Martin SS / 2B / St. Johns College HS (DC), VA / 2023

Some of the best bat to ball in this class. Does not swing and miss much and has solid swing decisions. Slight coil load, hands stay tight, and has a medium length, level path swing through the zone. Had multiple hits on the day and showed the ability to use the whole field. Florida State recruit.

Colgan

Christian Abney 3B / 1B / Colgan , VA / 2023

Abney came on in relief of Renfrow and was outstanding. He made fairly quick work of his extended outing. The uncommitted senior sat 83-86 mph with the fastball and utilized a mid 70's slider to get swings and misses and finish counts. The slider was the go to pitch early on and as he went deeper into the outing he utilized the fastball a little more frequently when he was ahead, especially versus a mostly left-handed hitting lineup.

Julius Bagnerise SS / 2B / Colgan, VA / 2025

This is our first time seeing Bagnerise in a while and it was a good first look to start the spring. Bagnerise has a lean, thin frame and is an athletic player. Light on his feet and fairly easy mover. Average arm strength across the infield. Watching Bagnerise at the plate, the one thing that stood out is how aggressive he is, especially early in counts. He is looking to hit, but does not necessarily expand the zone a bunch. In his first at bat he flew out to left field and would later single through the right side. The Colgan shortstop has solid bat to ball skills and did not show much swing and miss on the day. Average runner that I anticipate being an above average run tool in the future.

Jae'dan Carter C / Colgan, VA / 2023

Carter's arm strength continues to progress behind the plate. He has always shown average to slightly above average arm strength and he keeps adding. Throws were on line and had some carry to them. As usual, Carter hits. Expanded up just a touch in his first at bat, flying out to left on an elevated breaking ball. Later he hit a two RBI single through the left side. Love the bat to ball skill and has definitely solidified himself as the best all around catcher in the state for the 2023 class.

Brett Renfrow OF / RHP / Colgan, VA / 2023

The Virginia Tech recruit and Super 60 alum got the start for Colgan. Renfrow worked four innings on the day. The fastball saw 90-93 during his first three innings and was more 89-91 in his fourth inning of work. He got whiffs on the fastball in the zone, as well as a few chases up. He showed four pitches on the day, but was mostly fastball, slider, changeup. Both the curveball and slider were loose in the first inning-plus and did not have a great feel, but the feel for the slider got better as he got deeper into the outing. The changeup was his go to secondary pitch, especially facing so many left-handed hitters. The changeup was mostly 82-84 with an outlier or two. He showed two or three changeups that flashed above average.
