A look at the Conference Champions:

No. 17 First Colonial is the top seed out of Conference 1 as the regular season champs, but the Patriots lost the Conference Championship game in extra innings to Ocean Lakes, only their second loss of the spring. The Patriots have been fine on the mound, but have been carried by their offense all spring, which has scored less than four runs only twice all season. Senior Justin Cook (Richmond) and juniors Riley Clifford, Alec Giles, and Tommy Green lead the balanced attack.

Monitor-Merrimac Conference 2 Champion No. 4 Grassfield has been one of the best teams in the state all spring. The Grizzlies are good defensively and capable of scoring runs when they need to. The have one of the most dominant pairings on the mound with senior Garrett Stallings (Tennessee) and junior Hunter Perdue (Virginia), both of whom are capable of taking over a game. Senior Dwight Riddick (Norfolk State) leads a younger lineup that makes plays defensively and executes in the clutch.

Manchester captured the Conference 3 Championship on Friday, rallying in the seventh to beat Cosby in walk-off fashion after trailing for most of the game. The Lancers have been led on the mound by senior Zach Newman. The offense is deep and balanced and led by seniors Aaron Colyer and J.T. Creed.

No. 18 Colonial Forge won the Conference 4 Championship on Friday by shutting out Hylton. The Eagles have a deep, experienced team that’s core has played together for multiple seasons. Senior Matt Nickles (Randolph Macon) and junior Logan Barker (Marshall) form the top of the rotation and the lineup is built around Matt and his twin Mike Nickles (Randolph Macon), catcher Gabe Schilke (Navy), and Barker.

Our Staff Picks:

John Nolan
Championship: Grassfield defeats Western Branch
Dark Horse: Western Branch. Senior ace Corey Klak (Old Dominion) has been a force all spring and the Bruins have a talented group of position players.
Early Upset: C.D. Hylton defeats Manchester. Seniors Ryan Billy, Trey Shepard (Walters State CC), and Fox Semones (James Madison) are all available to pitch and capable of shutting down a good lineup and the Bulldogs have a good defensive team behind them that can manufacture runs.
Best Game on Paper: Colonial Forge vs Grassfield. Forge is one of the most experienced, veteran lineups in the state, and they have more than enough pitching to hang with Grassfield. A fourth meeting between Grassfield and Western Branch would be a fun game as well.
