VHSL State Tournament Scoreboard: 6/23

Five State Semifinals got played Tuesday after rain impacted the schedule, and the the other seven were played Wednesday night, setting the field for Saturday's State Championship games.

Wednesday, June 23

 

Class 6 Semifinals

No. 3 Colgan 11, No. 14 Cosby 1

Colgan will play at No. 1 James Madison Saturday, first pitch at 6 pm.

 

Class 5 Semifinals

No. 2 Frank Cox 11, No. 22 Mills Godwin 0
Michael Irby (East Carolina) threw a 5-inning shutout, striking out 5 while allowing just 4 hits, and throwing 89 pitches, which should remove him from the mix for Saturday. Fenwick Trimble (James Madison) had a HR and 2 RBI and Sam Slevin (Randolph-Macon) and Ethan Anderson (Virginia) each had 2 hits while Slevin drove in 3 and 2 3Bs. Michael Hagin was 2-2 for Godwin. 

No. 25 Woodgrove 12, Mountain View 2
Joey Colucci struck out 8 in 3.2 innings of 1-hit scoreless ball to start the game for the Wolverines. Michael Thomas, Zach Rice, and Riley Smith all had multi-hit games in the win. Britt Yount (George Mason) and Evan Hamill (Navy) each had a double for Mountain View.

Woodgrove will host Cox at 2 pm on Saturday for the State Championship. 

 

 

Class 4 Semifinals

No. 18 Broad Run 3, Halifax County 2 (11)
The Spartans won a walk-off hit-by-pitch in the eleventh after Halifax had tied the game with 2 outs in the seventh. Andrew Market went 5 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 5 K in a no decision and Connor Hale (Villanova) picked up the win in relief with 4 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 7 K on 55 pitches, which leaves him available for Saturday. Market was also 2-5 and Matt Mizelle was 2-4 with an RBI for the Spartans. Jaxon Lloyd (VMI) struck out 10 in 6.2 IP of 3-hit ball in the start for Halifax. Gavin Colwell went 3-5 with an RBI. 

Broad Run will host No. 4 Hanover Saturday for the State Championship, time is TBD.

 

Class 3 Semifinals

Independence 4, Lafayette 1
Sam Davies (St. Joseph's) went 4.2 innings of 2-hit shutout ball with 9 strikeouts to pick up the win. Bryce Dolby (Mississippi) struck out 5 in 2.1 innings of relief and was 2-3 at the plate. Josh Hand was 2-3 with a 2B and a 3B for Indy. South McDowell was 2-3 for the Rams and Luke Hanson (Virginia) threw a complete game, striking out 10, while going 1-3 with a BB.

Independence will play at No. 9 Abingdon on Saturday, first pitch scheduled for 6 pm. 

 

Class 2 Semifinals

No. 7 Lebanon 4, No. 8 Chatham 0
Matthew Buchanan (Virginia) threw a 1-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in just 74 pitches, making him available Saturday. Buchanan was also 1-3 with a 3B and 2 RBI. Preston Steele was 1-2 with a HR and a BB and Anthony Houchins was 3-4. Carrington Aaron (Virginia Tech) struck out 8 in 3.2 innings of 3-hit relief for Chatham. 

Poquoson 8, Page County 3
The Islanders tied the game at 3 in the fifth and then scored five in the top of the sixth to put the win away. Justin Bradshaw threw 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win, allowing 4 hits. Chase Horton was 2-4 with an RBI and a 3B. Lance Williams (Virginia Tech) struck out 12 in 5.2 innings for Page, but got touched up in the sixth inning.

Poquoson will travel to Lebanon Saturday for the State Championship game, first pitch scheduled for 4:30 pm.

 

 

Class 1 

Auburn will host Essex Saturday, first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
