VISAA State Championships: Friday Quick Hits

Friday, May 20 was the second day of VISAA Championship weekend at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights. The day's action featured a quadruple header with the Division II and Division I semifinals.

 

#6 Highland 12, Steward 11

Steward jumped out to an early 9-0 lead with a 7-run first inning and two more in the second. The Hawks were able to claw back with a quartet of home runs off the bats of Connor McAuley (Randolph-Macon), Nate Dulevitz (Mary Washington), Griffin Carroll (CNU), and Ryan Gimbel. A 2-out, 3-run rally in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hawks the lead, with Dulevitz delivering the game-tying hit and Joey Rogers driving in the go-ahead run. John Noah Lukonis was outstanding in relief, firing 3.1 scoreless innings and allowing just 2 hits with 5 strikeouts to finish the game for the Hawks. Offensively for Steward, Sam Roberson, Andrew Schmeer, Michael Lewis, and Michael Moore all had multi-hit games and Roberson also drew 2 walks while Schmeer had 3 RBI. 

 

#13 Greenbrier Christian 10, Isle of Wight 3

The Gators blew a 4-3 game open with a 6-run bottom of the sixth inning to advance to their third straight State Championship game and a rematch of the 2021 Title game. Nico Angrisani threw a complete game, allowing just 7 hits while also going 2-3 and driving in 3 runs at the plate. Also for Greenbrier, Brandon Dahlman (Queens University NC) went 3-4 with a 2B and 2 RBI while Austin Younce (VCU) was 2-2 with a BB. For Isle of Wight, Payton Shipman had a home run and Dustin Moon (Paul D Camp) was 2-4 with an RBI and a 2B.

 

 

#4 Cape Henry Collegiate 10, Collegiate 5

The Dolphins bounced back from a 5-3 deficit to advance to the State Championship Game. Parker Wright was 4-4 with a 2B and 3 RBI, Kenny Schaedel (Georgia Tech) was 3-3 with a 3B and 2 RBI, and Tanner Schaedel was 2-4. Jack Wickum tossed 2.2 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts. 

 

 

Miller School 6, #12 St. Christopher's 3

The Mavericks turned a 1-1 into a second upset with a 5-run fourth inning that opened up a 6-1 lead at that point. TJ Brooks (JMU) was outstanding early, going 5 innings and striking out 10 as Miller opened up a sizeable lead. Devin Christopher was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Laken Tignor (Patrick Henry CC) was 1-3 with a BB and 2 RBI. Carter Schmitt (Randolph-Macon) and Sterling Austin (Hampden-Sydney) both had multi-hit games for St. Christopher's.
