2023 Team Preview - Olympia

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

The 2023 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Washington.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons at the State Tournament, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Washington. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews and eventually releasing our preseason Top 25 teams in the state.

Please keep checking back throughout the season as we will be your one-stop shop for everything related to high school baseball across the state. Each week we will be releasing our players of the week and updating the Top 25 teams in the state.

Team Outlook:
The defending 4A state champs finished the 2022 season with a final record of 25-3 and were one of the few teams in the state to have the joy of winning their final game of the season. Despite some big losses in the senior class from last year, the Bears don’t look like they’re ready to take a step back and yet again seem prepared for another deep playoff run.  The top of the rotation remains strong with Sr LHP Sax Matson (Southern California) ready to lead the way and get the ball in big games throughout the season. He’ll also look to help drive the offense from the middle of the order and play OF when not handling pitching duties. Fellow seniors Logan Shepherd (Tacoma CC) and Evan Nicol (Saint Martin’s) will also be key bats for the offense this season and both look poised for productive years. Look for juniors Cameron Costello and Jack Skelley to potentially step up into more prominent roles this year and fill some vacated positions. Costello showed some big gains in the preseason with some added power from the left side. A pair of high level sophomores should help round out the starting line-up with Trace Pruitt and Lincoln Berg. Both have varsity experience from last year as Berg delivered the go-ahead 2 rbi single to help propel Olympia in the title game. Costello, Berg and Pruitt are all capable arms who will likely contribute significant innings this season. Senior Sam Twitty should get a bulk of the catching duties behind the plate handling the staff. Overall, Olympia has big shoes to fill from a championship level club. But given what we’ve seen from them in the last few seasons, don’t expect this roster to be content with anything less than ending the season with another dogpile.
