Team Outlook:
Sumner finished the 2022 campaign with a final record of 18-7 after a quarterfinals loss to Skyline in the state playoffs. Looking ahead to this season, there are a lot of reasons to be optimistic about the Spartans roster. Starting at the top of the rotation with senior LHP Jacob Bresnahan (Oregon commit) leading the way. Figures to be one of the top starting pitching prospects in the state this year and also provides a potent LH bat on the offensive side of things. Senior RHP Joey Kosko (Montana State - Billings commit) gives the Spartans a very strong 1-2 punch to work. Several key sluggers also return with plenty of varsity experience under their belt. Seniors Jay Mentink (Princeton commit) and Brayden Adcox (Pacific Lutheran commit) can really cover ground in the OF and both are capable of making plays with their arms as well. Senior Sean Ryan (Lower Columbia commit) brings experience to the INF and yet another proven LH bat to the lineup.  ‘24 Jaxen Mentink will continue to handle catching duties and has proven to be able to really halt the opponent’s run game. He’ll also provide an impactful LH bat at the plate. Keep an eye out for fellow junior Bradley Carl who impressed this preseason with his overall strength and bat speed at the plate. As well as junior RHP Chase Kreuger whose velocity and pure stuff is trending upward as of late. Sumner has a unique line-up with 6 projected starters all hitting from the left-side, something you really don’t see often at the HS level. While it may lead to some tough match-ups against the talented LH arms in the SPSL, over the course of a long season this should be one of the tougher match-ups that opposing pitchers will face. Between that and their experienced starting pitching, the Spartans are poised to make another run into the state playoffs this season.
