Most Viewed Profiles of 2020 - Max Debiec

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Our #2 most viewed profile of 2020 belongs to '21 RHP Max Debiec (O'Dea)

Debiec has had a rapid ascension in the scouting world and blossomed from a projectable, low mileage arm with intriguing upside into one of the top RHP pitching prospects in the 2021 class. The Washington commit offers a unique blend of size, athleticism and pure stuff that you don't often find. At 6'6 - 6'7, there's still room to add physicality to his frame and grow into a workhorse-type build. On our early looks, Debiec worked with a FB in the 88-92 range. Featuring heavy action but with more ride/life than you would expect from a low slot. For more on Debiec's unique pitching arsenal, check out his Trackman Confidential feature

This past summer, Debiec made a jump with his velo and was up to 95 mph with his FB at the PBR Classic in June. He also shows a breaking ball in the 75-79 range that flashes above average at its best. If 2020 proved anything, it showed that scouts won't hesitate to pull the trigger on talented arms from the Pacific Northwest on draft day. Regardless of what happens with the high school season in 2021, expect Debiec to garner a lot of attention.

Scouting Report

4/30/20

Debiec has shown well from our first look at him in the spring of 2019 all the way thru the Underclass Area Code Games in August. At 6-foot-6, approximately 195 pounds, there’s still a lot to dream on with his frame. His build is more wiry strong than it is lanky and he’s likely going to show improved movements on the mound as he continues to get stronger. With long levers at a young age, it can be tough for exceptionally tall pitchers to consistently get their actions synced up. But his overall athleticism bodes well for future adjustments. He’s a low milage arm who should continue to improve as he gets more seasoning. The FB has been as high as 91-92 on our looks while consistently holding 87-90. Ball jumps out of hand and features late life into the zone. The breaking ball has swing and miss potential at 73-77. His ¾ release point creates true slurve shape to the pitch and it’s steadily improved its depth and bite on our looks

It’ll be exciting to keep track of Debiec in the next year and see how he progresses. A velo jump is likely, which would definitely help his prospect status on a national level. How much size/mass he adds will help determine how long he’ll be able to sustain his stuff over the course of a season. In terms of a potential role, he could profile nicely as a 2-pitch, power arm who racks up a lot of strikeouts in short stints. Or the addition of a 3rd offering, like a reliable CH, could give him more weapons to turn over a line-up with and work deeper into games. Expect Debiec to have plenty of eyes on him when he’s able to get back on the mound again.

4/01/20

Debiec shined late last summer as he emerged as one of the more projectable prospects in the class. The Washington recruit has been up to 92 mph with a heavy fastball that features some late life in the zone. A quick, fuller arm stroke is utilized with the ball jumping out of the hand out front, and he demonstrates feel for a potential swing-and-miss breaking ball at 73-77. Though he was still becoming more comfortable with the movement patterns of his long limbs on the mound in the summer, Debiec looked noticeably stronger on the hardwood where he was a key-contributor for a nationally ranked O’Dea HS basketball squad. That athleticism on the court bodes well for future adjustments made on the mound, and there is a solid chance that Debiec makes significant jumps in the future as he gets more innings under his belt.

3/13/19

Big, extra tall frame at 6-foot-6, 185 pounds. Plenty of room for additional strength and development. Still growing into his body but shows quality athleticism and moves well on the diamond. On a cool night where the ball wasn’t carrying at all, Debiec had a huge day at the plate with 2 towering shots to the pull-side gap. The first went for a 2B and the next a 3B. Naturally creates some easy leverage with his frame and should add more power as he develops. Stays balanced thru contact. As is the case with most really tall hitters, the swing can get long at times due to the length of his limbs. But when he does connect, the ball will travel. Defensively he presents a sizable target at 1B and should be able to stick there long-term. Very intriguing, young prospect to keep an eye on.
