Quick Hits From Metro Playoffs - Bishop Blanchet / Lakeside

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Seattle, WA - We continued with our coverage of the Metro league playoffs again on Thursday afternoon.

In our first game, Bishop Blanchet took on the Lakeside Lions

We had the chance to see Lakeside back in March but Thursday was our first look at ‘19 RHP Jared Feikes (Santa Clara commit). Pitching from a high ¾ slot with a short, quick arm action, Feikes came out pumping FB’s into the zone at 87-89. CB is an above average offering at 73-76 with tight 11/5 shape and depth into the zone. Showed reliable command of his breaking ball as well as an understanding of when to use it. Also flashed a quality CH with late arm-side fade at 79. Feikes has a simple, repeatable delivery with sound mechanics. There’s noticeable strength in his 6-foot-2, 200 pound frame. The lower half is sturdy and allows him to stay balanced in his legs throughout his delivery. Held velocity on his FB thru all 6+ innings of work. Feikes has an impressive blend of pure stuff to go with his current pitchability.

With the 2019 MLB Draft roughly one month away, there were still plenty of scouts out in attendance to get eyes on ‘19 OF Corbin Carroll (UCLA commit) again. Back in March, Carroll had a quiet game at the plate, going 1-4 with a single. On this look he saw a good amount of pitches to hit and was ready for them. After grounding out to second in his first AB, he proceeded to rip a line-drive single to RF and then launched a solo HR to CF in his next two trips. He was intentionally walked in his next plate appearance. Continued to flash his well above average speed with 4.08 down the line and a 4.27 on the turn.

‘19 1B Luke Porter (Grinnell College commit) had a big game offensively for the Lions, going 2-4 with 2 RBI. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Porter has a wide, physical build with the chance to develop more power as he gets stronger. Does a good job of staying short and compact with his swing, especially for having longer arms. Showed a good feel for the barrel on this look and makes loud, hard contact when he connects. Porter and Corbin Carroll were the only players on either team to record multi-hit games.

For Bishop Blanchet, they sent 3 arms to the mound in an attempt to keep the Lakeside offense quiet. ‘21 RHP Wyatt Adams got the start and was solid across 2.2 innings of work. He allowed 2 ER, didn’t walk a batter and struck out 1.

Adams was relieved by ‘20 OF/RHP Connor Stutz. We saw Stutz in action earlier this season and he continued to show similar stuff to our previous look. FB at 77-79, topped at 80 with steep downward angle at times. Also has a consistent 11/5 CB that he mixes in regularly. Stutz pitched 2.1 innings and then gave way to ‘20 LHP Wes Harkins to begin the bottom of the 6th. Harkins throws from a low ¾ arm slot with some cross-action deception in his delivery. Did a great job to put up a zero in his only inning of work. Although we wouldn’t truly appreciate how significant his appearance was until Bishop Blanchet was done batting in the top of the 7th.

In the top of the 7th, Blanchet was down by 3 runs and after the first 2 batters got out, ‘20 OF Nathan Prinz looked to keep the game alive. He responded with his first hit of the game, a single to the left side. After that, ‘19 C Brian Spear singled up the middle to bring the tying run to the plate. ‘20 OF Luke Rican drew a walk and suddenly Blanchet now had the tying run on first and the go-ahead run up to the plate in 20 OF Andrew Holloman. The junior OF'er delivered big time in the clutch. His line-drive single up the middle took a nasty hop and ended up getting all the way to the fence, sending all 3 runners home and putting Holloman at second base. The inning wasn’t over yet though. ‘20 RHP/INF Jarek Woodward, who pitched Blanchet into this match-up with his CG effort on the mound Tuesday, took a ball the other way for a clean single and brought Holloman around to score the go-ahead run.

Hanging onto a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the 7th, Blanchet went back to Connor Stutz on the mound. He responded by getting a clean 1-2-3 inning and locked up the save.

‘20 INF/RHP Cody Dreis and ‘19 1B/LHP Aidan Kennedy each had hits for Bishop Blanchet earlier in the game. Dreis came around to score the first run of the game in the 2nd inning after his lead off single.
