Quick Hits From Metro Playoffs - Eastside Catholic / O'Dea

Seattle, WA -  The tail end of our DH on Thursday night was a competitive, high scoring match-up between Eastside Catholic and O’Dea. After a loud, high energy start to the game, things settled down in the middle innings and ultimately O’Dea finished things off with a 10-7 victory. It was a tough night for the pitching on both sides, with each offense finding their grove right out of the gate and scoring consistently throughout the game.

Let’s get things started with Eastside Catholic.

‘20 INF Kenji Suzuki (Clemson commit) had the loudest offensive performance of any hitter on the night. Finished the game 2-4 with a 3B, HR and 4 RBI. We’ve had a few looks at Suzuki throughout the spring and he continues to show impressive power when he connects the ball to his barrel. His 3 run homer in the top of the 4th gave Eastside a brief 1 run lead.

Two other players had multi-hit games for the Crusaders: ‘19 3B Nico Carrigan and ‘21 INF Thomas Martin. The duo also combined for 4 of the 7 runs scored. Carrigan continues to show a disciplined, mature approach at the plate. Martin has come onto the scene late with some big hits on the offensive side and he’ll be an intriguing bat to keep an eye on moving forward.

Another youngster who continues to perform for Eastside is ‘21 C Jack Rhea. He hit his 2nd double in as many games this week. The feel he has for the barrel has been impressive thus far.

For O’Dea, it was a collective effort from the offense to push across 10 runs. ‘20 INF Kelly Corl (Gonzaga commit) got things going early when he led off the game with a triple and eventually came in to score after a single from ‘19 SS Ben Patacsil (Portland commit). O’Dea would go on to score 5 total runs in the 1st inning. After that, the offense scored 5 additional runs in innings 4, 5 and 6. ‘19 C Michael Miner was the only player to get multiple hits for the Fighting Irish. He finished 2-2 with a 2B and 2 RBI.

On the bump, the Fighting Irish used a trio of arms to get the job done. ‘19 RHP Jake Snyder (Creighton commit) got the start and while it was a tough outing for him when you look at the stats, he flashed quality stuff with tremendous movement on all of his offerings. The big righty pitches from a lower slot and understands how to manipulate the ball to both sides of the plate while generating consistent sink. His FB sat in the 82-85 range while his breaking ball varied between 69-74.

‘20 RHP Anthony Adams came on in relief and continued to show advanced feel for his breaking ball. On our previous look, Adams went right at hitters with his tight slider at 70-72 and Thursday was more of the same. FB ranged between 77-79 while his breaking ball was in the 68-72 range.

Lastly, uncommitted ‘21 RHP Max Debiec came on for the final 6 outs and flashed some of the most impressive, pure stuff we've seen from any arm this spring. With a lanky, projectable 6’6 frame, Debiec came out with his FB at 85-87 from a low ¾ slot with fluid, whippy arm action. As he continued to throw, the velocity steadily climbed. After touching 88 and 89, Debiec reached back and popped 91 in his first inning of relief. He eventually finished the 7th with 91 again on a FB for strike 3. Not only was the velocity impressive, but he can generate tremendous spin on his breaking ball in the 75-77 range. It’s a sharp, slurve shaped bender that funnels well with his FB before showing hard, late break out of the zone. Debiec will be a big time arm to follow heading into this summer.
